New Nikon 10.2 MP - D200 Upgrade?

First of all, the body in the teaser ad is not a D200 body. Any D200 update would surely just involve the internal guts of the D200 but still use the existing D200 body, which is the best small body I've ever used (and the best small body available from anybody, as far as I'm concerned).

Secondly, the D200 just came out and probably won't be publicly updated for awhile yet. I said publicly updated, but I could believe there may be a silent update or two. Nikon has done that before - add in some updates and just not tell anyone. But the teaser ad is a very public announcement, so it just wouldn't make sense for it to be a D200 update. Besides, the only thing that's really wrong with the D200 is the occasional short banding that some people see. I don't see a banding fix introduced the way this new camera is being introduced.

Most likely the teaser ad is for a new camera that's going to fit between the D70s and D200 in the lineup. It'll most likely be targeted against the new Sony DSLR, and Canon's 30D. As someone else said, it'll most likely be a D200 lite. Plastic body. Fewer readout channels. A few other tradeoffs to reduce cost.

As for those people who suggest it'll be a full frame - dream on. The teaser ad clearly shows a consumer-grade body, like the D50 or D70s. When Nikon finally introduces full frame (and it will someday), it'll first show up in a full pro body (D3 maybe?).

Regarding the rumored D20 name - that doesn't make any sense, unless Nikon is totally revamping it's naming conventions. Under the current naming conventions, a D20 would be a very, VERY low spec cameara. If Nikon does come out with such a low spec camera (something below the D50), it won't have a 10 MPix sensor. That would totally undercut the D50, which I don't think Nikon will do. However, while I don't think the new 10.2 MPix camera will be a D20, that doesn't mean Nikon isn't also coming out with a new low end camera. But why D20? All other consumer grade bodies have had odd numbers. So that would suggest a new low spec body would be a D30. Again, this all assumes Nikon isn't totally revamping it's naming conventions.

The most logical explanations are usually the best explanations. And the most logical place for a new camera with 10.2 MPix is a new camera that fits between the D70s and D200 in features. D80 seems to be the most bandied about name.

As I said in another post on this thread, I do believe Nikon will come out with a full frame sensor some day, but when it does, it'll first show up in one of Nikon's full pro bodies. The D3 is a likely candidate. The body in the teaser ad is clearly a consumer grade body, like the D50 and D70s. And Nikon is not about to make it's first use of full frame in a consumer grade body. I think all this talk of the new camera being full frame is total wishful thinking.

HI!

I think, the new Nikon "Thing" will compete with the new Sony SLR.

Sony and Pentax will have image stabilisation in the body when released in a couple of weeks.... Good quality lenses will have a second life!

Will Nikon be tempted to share some technology??? Unlikely, I agree, but why don't we see the long expected consumer 70-300 VR around since the first prototype pictures are almost 10 months old and were released at the same time as the 105VR???

May be, just maybe, Nikon is adjusting the plan to keep it's share of the consumer market...

Warning, don't release this one like the D200, make it available and get rid of the banding issues with this sensor once and for all.

We will know in 16 days. When will we be able to get it ..... sometime ...???

10.2Meg Full Frame would be an excellent High ISO low noise camera. I prefer a smaller body similar to 35mm F85 body.

at the risk of breaking the NDA all I can say is that you will have to wait and see. I can say that you will be very suprised and pleased with the latest improvments and bug fixes.

I've been pounding my head against the wall for over a month now trying to pick a good-quality camera.

The more I've gone over it all -- the more uncertain I've become. The picture quality of the D70 impressed

me. the Canon Digital Rebel XT seems to impress everyone (but too small for my big hands). I almost
purchased the Sony-R1 because I think the pics look Incredible but not SLR....

So -- the one thing I can add to this forum thread is: I'M GOING TO WAIT AND SEE THE NEW NIKON.

The word: "compact," scares me a bit ('cause my hands are big). And I definitely found it
"surprising that a company with a new 10.2 D200 that everyone raves about would
introduce a new 10.2MP.

Also, I'm thinking Canon will come out soon with a new Rebel -- um, XT 2...it's about due and
they been selling off the XT with big rebates....

If truth be told, thought, if Sony extended the zoom on the R1 and a few other things..I'd
probably Love and R2......

....gads....I don't know how much longer I can take this!

I love my camera, although I am still learning all about it. It
takes beautiful pictures!!! Is the 6mp enought????
Whether 6MP is enough or not depends on what you want to do with your images.
  • how large do you print? A4-A3 is 6MP realm, larger is not really an option (and even A3 is not such a good idea for landscape images for instance),
  • what are your main subjects? 6MP is probably enough for portrait, casual shooting, vacation snaps,... but I find it to be too short for serious landscape work for instance,
  • do you have special needs in terms of cropping?
  • ...
Either way, many a shooters don't fully use the potential of their camera because of average technique. Improving once technique with a 6MP D70s before upgrading later on is IMHO a good thing to do.

Bernard

I can hardly believe some of the comments here. Anyone with common sense should know that this camera will replace the D70S, it's not a D200 upgrade nor is it replacing the D50. It will be 10 mp of course and have a 2.5 inch LCD, but everything else will be comparable to the D70S with perhaps a few more features or improvements. It will be smaller than teh D70s, close to what the D50 is. I think the biggest question mark is whether they will impove on the D70S viewfinder, which I think is critical. It doesn't have to be as good as an F100 or D200, but it needs to be larger & brighter than the D50/D70S. Heck, even the Pentax *ist DL is better in that department. I'm kind of worried however, that they are just cramming the D200 sensor into a D50 body, with the front command wheel and other D70S features. This wait is going to drive me crazy. Why did Nikon have to do it this way? Why can't they just put it out there and say available August 9??

It is rumored that it will have the D200 viewfinder rather than the D70/s viewfinder. That should be an improvement.

Whatever it is, I hope it has better ISO800 and 1600 performance than the D200!

I'm not a big fan of the Sony 10.2MP CCD that is used. I hope they made some changes to improve things a tad. I have not bought a D200 because of the sensor. I'd like the D2Hs sensor in a smaller camera. I'll even take the sensor that's in the D50 over the D200's sensor. I love the body so much though. None of the pieces are really coming together for me though and since I'm not making money with cameras right now, I don't need to own one other than what I've got already so I can just hold on.

Maybe this new DSLR will be what I'm looking for but cheaper! That'd be cool, but I'm thinking "fat chance."

I have a 20"x30" great horned owl above my fireplace that is outstanding, and a 20" x 30" grizzly shot at 640 ISO in my bedroom that is also outstanding, both shot with a D70 and 300mm f4 so anyone who tells you, you can't print above 12 x18, either hasn't done it, or is comparing it to medium format quality, they are also standing three inches away from a poster size image. I now have a D200 and wouldn't trade it for anything short of a D2X. I have 20" by 30" shots with the D200 which are arguably sharper but at normal viewing distances for prints this large, they are indistinguishable. Enjoy your D70 it is capable of incredible photos, and the only reason to need to upgrade is speed and controls, the image quality is already superb, unless you plan on printing really big 4' x 6 ' or bigger, then go get yourself a 1ds mark II.
