I noticed Nikon is advertising the pending release of a new digital SLR, at 10.2 MP, that's about all the info they give on their Global site. I'm just wondering if its a D200 upgrade, the article here says its more like a D70/D70s upgrade...in 16 days we'll know for sure....any input?

Come on, the D200 is just 8 month old, any idea, why there should be an update? It's clear, that the next cams to come out from Nikon are a D70(s) successor/addition and the D3H. Now we see the introduction of the successor of the D70(s).

Maybe so, but why would you upgrade a D70/D70s when the D200 seems more like an upgrade to those previous cameras....I really have no idea and your probley right. I could see an upgrade for the D50 since its got its own nich to say, but the D200 seems more like an upgrade for the D100, the D70, so it would seem that the next camera upgrades would run in the D200, maybe a D200s or something...I just can't see Nikon carrying on all these different model numbers when a D200 replaces them to some extent....but I'm just guessing on this one...I have no insider info or anything like that.

Have you ever considered that there may actually be people who currently have point and Shoot cameras and want something the next level up from a D50 in a Nikon DSLR?

If you are a D70 owner there is no gun to your head to replace it with this new model. You are free to buy a D200 if you choose to.

D70 is now almost 3 years old technology. Nikon are updating their range in that market segment.

Something like this get's posted in the "pro" Nikon forum. And I was too shy to post a real question here as I only have D70, even though my question probably would have been answered better here than in D70/D50 forum.

Think! D200 is the newest camera for Nikon. From all of the camers they need to upgarade are they really going to change D200?

Just look at the teaser and you xill see that the upper part of the new DSLR is D70 like not D200 i.e there is a silver release and a simple power switch

The dial on the other side is a D50/70 type ...

I own a D50 and have worked with a D200.

I can clearly see Nikon wants to replace the D50/70 line with a 10 Mpix version simply because it would give them an edge over the 350D / 30D

It would simply be another selling point and clearly Nikon wants to prevent "new customer" sales loss to Canon.

They will also aim such a camera to the enthousiast amature who does not want to spend 1650 euros on a body alone. The cam will definitly have less settings and tweaks than the D200 and I guess it will only support D/G lenses just as the D50/70 (I know, you can use the D50 with old lenses as well. I have posted some MF examples before). It will probably have outstanding out of cam jpeg performance, just as the D50.

I would call it D90

Best guess on ads we will see next month (from a marketing perspective):
"D90" body EUR 999,-
"D90" / 18-70 combo EUR 1199,-
"D90" / 18-200 combo EUR 1699.-

There is a huge price point gap between the D70s and the D200 -- one which is being addressed by Sony's Alpha and the Canon 30D.

If Nikon brings out a camera half way between the D70s and the D200 at a price point in between, well that would make a lot of sense to me (not originally my idea, I got it from another thread). I think it will be a D90 with a street price of around $1199.

Nikon will have D20 or D40 for low end market $350.
D70s will state as is at $500.
D200 will further reduce price to $1100
D300 or what ever price at $2000 for Full Frame
D3 for profressional

It will be better to kill Sony and Pentax. Canon also give a gap between 350D and 30D where no one interest it any more.

If you are beginner, just low end DSLR is good enough. If you want something, D70s already out. At least a D200 performance. D300 like can response to Canon 5D. D3 type is high end profressional not really the biggest profit.

There are many D70 user need to upgrade, a D300 will feel more like a long term direction.

Most likely the price of the new 10.2 will be closer to $1000 and many D50/ D70 owners might consider an "upgrade" to it who will not consider the D200. Another factor for some is weight. I have the D50 and the D200 is too heavy for my needs. I am hoping the the new 10.2 will be closer in weight to the D50/D70. If so, I may buy it.

I can't see this as a D200 upgrade, the camera just hasn't been out for long enough and there still seem to some availability problems. IMHO it's more likely to be a D70s upgrade.

What intrigues me is the spec and price. Nikon can't raise the bar too far, or the camera will start to compete with the D200, and I doubt if they want that.

I turned down the D70/D50 because I just couldn't live with the viewfinder and lack of support for manual glass, and was about to get the D200 but it's around $3000 in South Africa. That's too much for me. I want a DSLR, but don't really need one, so I'll wait for a while.

first it wil be announced, then you´ll have to wait for launch, then wait for availability. Unless you want to wait until christmas for global availability your 70s is fine ; )

$3000 is expensive for a D200, I don't blame you I'd wait too or make a trip to the great America, and then when you get here hope you can find a body without having to be put on a waiting list. Most everyone agrees here that its the D70S upgrade, so I'm inclined to go with the masses. The new camera will be out before we know it, and I doubt they will hold off all the info for that long of a wait, although its Nikon's call. Its gonna be hard to beat the D200 in my view...the D50 is a good camera for the light weight, I've not used a D70....anyway it should be intresting and its good they are coming out with another new camera, it means their paying attention to the market and their customers....anyway good luck there in South Africa, I'd love to come there and shoot with my D200, Arkansas is not the greatest scenery on the planet, although we do have some intresting places to shoot....but when you lived here all your life or at least it seems that way, haha, its just boring after a while.

I just bought a d70s last weekend. Should I have waited???? I'm
wondering that now....
No one who really knows the answer to that is saying anything about it -- especially not here!

IF you think you're gonna crave what may turn out to be a camera in-between the D70s and the D200 then yeah, maybe you should have waited.

IF you are happy with the D70s, then shoot away and be happy! You have a great camera.

How about a full frame? Nikon needs something before Sony cuts off their sensor. They need to make a move before Sony and Samsung start running full bore. Remember what Nikon said when Canon was going to go for the one position.
