Final Advice Requested-about to take the D30 Plunge!

You may also want to factor in resale value as well...IMHO the canon 70-200L f4 will retain for more value than most any sigma.

Not to sway you one way or the other...when shopping for a lens I always check out all the available options - tamron, sigma, tokina, canon, etc. And I always seem to end up with the canon.

Mike

Since you seem relativevly new to this whole thing ( I could be
wrong about that and if I am my apologies), why not get yourself
the camera body and a good general purpose lens, say something
like 28-105 (etc.) or so and just use it for a while until you get
a feel for what your needs are?
My friend knows i like to zoom in from the ozone:

http://pages.prodigy.net/rmcelheny/osu.htm

My biggest mistake has always been
to rush into a purchase only to regret it soon after the return
period expires, which costs lots of money. If you are in any sort
of civilized area
sometimes i wonder :-)

http://pages.prodigy.net/rmcelheny/zoomed_in.htm

you can always rent lenses to use to better form
your opinions.

If you are looking for an alternate source to purchase, you will
easily find a few names around here - Adorama, B&H,
Canoga, Delta -- the two I'm considering
,
etc. If I were you I would stick to the most reputable sources. If
something is too cheap it's a scam.

Best of luck.

$1200 for canon or $639 for a comparable lens Sigma 70 -200 f2.8. My friends use this lens and swear by it.

This is the route I went last week- Charlie's logic was mine as well.
Mike, thanks, any recommendations that would be US waranteed? i
know maybe Canoga but they are ~$300 more?

All,
A few of my forum friends have indicated it sounds like a great
deal! Too good to be true? Should I wait? Opinions appreciated
on the $3K that I'm about to spend to get started. Any concerns
about supplier or equipment to start appreciated!
Kindest regards,

DeltaInternational.com:
D30 $1942
Sigma, that is the 70-200mm 2.8 APO $629
Canon 50mm 1.4 USM ~$350

If you are gonna buy from delta then you are not buying US
warranteed equipment (commonly referred to as 'grey market').
Therefore you will not be eligible for the canon rebates. :-(

As long as you are aware of that then go right ahead. I'm not a big
fan of sigma lenses either, but again that's your call.

Richard,

What is your opinion if you have a problem with the cam or lens? Are you satisfied so far? Did you get a newer serial number, not touched and without firmware upgrade needed?

MPSUPERSTORE.COM is canon authorized i believe. D30 is $2075. there are some mixed reviews but mostly good

Use AMEX blue and pricematch with regencycamera.com (I did this with my G2 also)
Thanks so much for your comment. I am thinking out going to
Canoga--I assume you are pleased and got factory fresh , good
service, etc.

With Canoga, looks like I'd get a rebate on the microdrive and
battery from Canon also.

I can't answer the Delta question...I do know Canoga might be a bit
higher
but they are very reliable. Talk to Greg Noble the GM at Canoga
Cameras.

I think Lee Rothmann deals with Delta...check out some of his
posts, I think the Delta comment is listed in this forum under "Yes
or No" (Do you want your merchandise to be factory fresh and
unopened at delivery)
Check it out.

Well I was referring to the f4 version which is reputed to be nearly as good as the 2.8 and costs about $550 after current rebate. That may well be my next lens. In any case after seeing your posts vis-a-vis the nosebleed seat zoom shots and the performance photo's you may well be better off with the extra stop you'll get with the sigma.

Best of luck to you. Enjoy.

Mike

I think that if your freids like the sigma and you obviously trust their judgement then this may be a easy decision. I have the canon 70-200 in both f2.8 and 4 I was planning on selling thr F4 but have kept it as the image quality is equal to the 2.8 but the lens is so much lighter to carry I still use it more.

I also find that with a lens of this length on a D30 it is unlikely you will shoot at 2.8 the DOF is too shallow for most shots.

If you purchase anything with a USA warranty purchase the camera. You can get service on it from Canon USA. Most importers do not want to service grey goods. My Canoga was $2295 with USA goodies. Don't get cheap over $75 or $100, in the long run we are talking pennies.

Also, B&H's lens prices for the three 70-200 L's are $659, $1,189 and $1,849. I even saw a 70-200 2.8 used at B&H today in the high $6's but it's gone now. (It was rated an 8, with nicks and chips on the paint.)

I like the idea of getting a good multi purpse lens as noted and working your way into a complete set.

Unless your a pro this is a very exspensive hobby. Try to research your products and buy what you know you will use. Just don't rush out and pay big bucks for products because of a few threads in a post. However, I must say, you get a lot of hands on real world knowledge in these threads.--Jeff Morris

Mike is right in both counts... Look into Canoga Camera
(authorised Canon USA dealer) for the D-30. And, buy the Canon
70-200L f4.0 (after 12/31 rebate $550 !) this is a far better lens
than the Sigma.

Good Luck!

Dave Werner
Have you ever used the sigma 70-200 before you made that claim.
Sigma is 3.9 on photodo while the canon is 4.1. Hardly any
difference except for that the sigma is evaluated wide open at f2.8
versus the canon's f4. BTW, the sigma is come with everything,
hood, tripod collar, and standard 77mm filter than that strange
67mm. And most importantly, I can tell you how important the f2.8
are!

Since we are giving advise to a new user who is here seeking for
information, anything inaccurate is just not good at all. No
offense in my mind, please...

Darkness is made up of dark particles.
As I said earlier, do a search of previous posts (you too "Wangler"). My bad experiences with Sigmas (2 0ut of 3 bad), many other's similar reports, returns and comments on Sigma's quality control problems are all there.

Yes, all other things equal, 2.8 is better than 4.0, but if the extra stop is not critical the Canon is...

1 Better made (more predictable and more reliable).
2 Sharper across its entire range of stops.
3 Much more compact and much lighter (if that's an issue).

4 Lower in initial cost (‘til the end of the month) and MUCH higher re-sale value and hence much lower in cost of ownership.
5 Works beautifully with the Canon 2X mk II converter.

And if the speed is critical a Canon 2.8 L (new or used, IS or not) would be far preferable to a Sigma.

And “Wangler”, you obviously don't know me, or anything about me. Don't lecture me in a manner that implies that I'm uninformed. You won’t find me expressing my opinions on lenses that I don’t own or haven’t personally used. If you have a chip on your shoulder about Sigma glass and need to defend it go ahead, but try to keep it on a technical level. If after a search on me or Sigma or whatever... you want to sound off to me, go ahead. I’m at [email protected] (and strangely enough, Dave Werner is my actual name!).

The Canon 70-200l F4.0 is the best gift a new owner can give himself without breaking the bank. A real "L" (in every sense of the word) for $550 is a wonderful thing... It will give you joy for years to come. Or you can spend more, buy the Sigma and leap to its defense in forums, while wondering what the real thing is like.

Excellent advice. As an advanced amateur, I can't quite understand why my fellow hobbyists don't seem to appreciate the gravity of a purchase like this. For me two grand plus on a camera is major bucks. (Just think of what that buys you outside the digital camera world... a lot!) So man, I want mine legit and able to go in for factory service if ever it needs it. Period.

Well said Dave. Since I don't have personal experience with any of the 3 lenses in question I have declined to conjecture on the details of each. Given my real live in person shopping experiences with other lenses of the same brands you are right on the money. Perhaps there is no technical spec for focus speed to be quoted, but all you have to do is use them to know. Same in my experience with build quality. Additionally you rarely hear of a "decent" canon lens croaking, sigmas seem to push up the daisies far more frequently.

Also I guess neither of us has covered the compatibility issue which at times surfaces with sigmas and new canon bodies. Don't have any personal experience but I know that does occur.

Still, sigmas are a lot of lens for the money, no doubt. I have a good friend who is quite good and swears by sigma. Who knows?

Live and let live, that's my motto ;-)

Mike

So far so good. I have shot about 600 pictures and have been very pleased except for some low light focus issues. Delta was great- shipped my stuff over night for free. According to Delta and many other posts, Canon is one of the few that will honor warranties even if grey market. I figured I had nothing to lose. My serial # is 133503183. Is that good or bad? I am running 1.01firmware. How old does that make my camera? I need to upgrade to 1.02 but have not had the chance. Still trying to decide if I am going to keep all the lenses I ordered or send some back within my two week period. Hope this helped.
