Just bought an S3. Read all manuals and installed software. When I connect the USB to my computer WinXP a note comes up saying "New Hardware Found". Seconds later another sign comes up saying "A problem occurred during installation and may not run properly". I have gone to the Divice Mgr found that there is a "!" on camera. I removed the driver and rebooted. Any time I connect the camera to the computer I have the same problem.

PS I went to the Canon Website and downloaded the Twain driver for the S series. When I tried to install the Twain Driver I got SEVERE Warning. Twain Driver File for WinXP not found. Exit the installation.
Someone PLEASE HELP
Thanks

Fresh Reboot the computer
Fresh install the all the requirement software from that CD

Then only, connect your camera.....you are not supposed to connect by any chance, by means, before loading the software.........

Also, do you have another USB port to try. And try it directly from the computer and not through a hub.

I never tried to connect the camera "before" I installed the software. I did reinstall the DVD information that came with the Camera. Still no luck.

Yes I have tried other USB slots still won't work. I know the other USB slots are good because I can connect other devices in those slots.

I have read "Don't know how true" that SP2 has a habit of losing drivers. Don't know how to find out whether driver is there or not.

I do not think my problem is with my camera. I brought my camera over to a friends house, plugged it into his computer and the Installation wizard came up. I know this is a camera forum and not a computer forum. But if someone has an idea how I can get the new program/intallation Wizard back it would be great.
Thanks

Hi!

Something similar happened to my USB ports/hubs in windoze, and this is what solved my problem.

Go into the device manager and find all the usb ports, hubs, etc. Delete all of these. Shut down windoze. Reboot and your OS should repopulate the hardware/drivers info you just deleted.

As I recall, this happened to me sometime after I installed SP2..Coincidence? Maybe.

It's worth a try. Good luck.

II get this with USB.

Its almost like you have to install twice, get to where you were, go to devuce manager, click on the driver with the exc, amation mark and choose reinstall driver or whatever XP says, DO NOT uninstall and reinstall, that should work.

Kelbrit,

Why don't you save yourself a lot of headache and frustration and simply purchase an SD Card Reader?

They can be had for as little as $10...

I personally have a Pro1 and have NEVER plugged it directly into my PC. I don't see the point when it's so easy to use a card reader, you also save precious battery life by not uploading thru the camera.

As a Network Administrator, I deal with XP problems all day, trust me when I tell you it is much easier to use the reader, no hassles! XP will see your reader as an extra drive (just as it would your S3) and most photo applications (I use PICASA) will detect the card automatically once it's plugged in and download your pics on the fly!!!

Good Luck!

Have you installed all of Microsoft's latest security patches ? This is just one item you should put out of the way as you troubleshoot your problem.

Launch EXPLORER and select TOOLS and then the WINDOWS UPDATE. if it comes back telling you that your Windows is up to date, then you have all patches.

If you don't have all the latest security patches, some stuff just won't run, including some of Microsoft's own software whci can just sit there and do nothing and gives the appearance of locking up.

Also make sure you try ALL USB ports. Not all USB ports are the same. Some of the older PCs had USB and USB2 ports. The S3 being so new may require a faster USB2 connection.

Just a few things to check out.

I second the advice - "Get a Card Reader"

The cards get read a whole lot faster.

Also - beware of the front panel USB plugs - this is a known problem for iPOD owners.

The cabling is not as good going to the front USB slots - always use a slot on the rear of the computer if you are having any trouble what so ever.

These two tips will make your live easier.

First of all I want to thank all of you have tried to help. This is one of the best forums I have been on. BTW I did purchase a card reader. I just wanted my camera to connect like it was supposed to.

Second my problem is solved (I think). I called Canon. It seems that the USB port my camera wanted to get into was being used by my scanner. I was told (and did) disable my scanner, leave my camera plugged into my computer reboot and presto there's my camera on the computer. I was told that printers are sometimes the main culprit.
Anyway my camera is now computer connectable.
Thanks again for you help.

Running into this problem too.

I realize that a card-reader is probably better, but like the original poster, it would be nice if I could actually use the camera as it is supposedly designed to allow.

Have a USB 2.0 expansion card which Windows 2K Pro recognizes, with a hub attached to one of the slots. Up until I tried installing the TWAIN 6.6 drivers for my S2, the computer recognized and allowed downloading of files from my A95. Now.. the computer doesn't recognize either camera.

the claim from Canon is the message, "The third-party INF does not contain a digital security signature" that terminates the installation is an OS issue, not a driver issue and that I need to call MS.

any help on this would be appreciated.

I have a question for you. I am getting a new Canon camera next week and did not plan to install it, I already have a camera installed. In Canada card readers are about$ 35.00. I was told, simply to connect the new camera's USB cable and the computer (XP) will recognize the camera. Would you know if that is a fact? Why do they insist to install before connecting?
Thanks,
Teri

Teri,

I had a CF card reader before and it recognizes all my CF cards.

Then I got the Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Hi-speed Reader since I had to use SD cards for the SD550, and it recognizes the cards without a problem.

I have the card reader attached to the main USB port on the computer and when I insert a card, it automatically opens my 'camera window' next. Or you could open 'my computer' and you will see the disk drives asssigned to that card reader.

(and I use Windows XP)

Alex,

I use a reader also for my Pro1 since it is 8 MP, large files and is only USB 1.1 compatible while all reader now are USB 2.0 compatible.

Sueanne, you have no idea how much I appreciate your replay. I am getting my SD 550 camera next week. I have a card reader for my CF card, now I have to get one for my SD card. My friends suggestion, plugging the USB camera cable into the computer without installing the camera first is a no no.
Thank you so much,
Teri

Well Teri,

'Before' I got the Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Hi-speed Reader, I did opposite of what your friends told you 'not' to do. (I did not install ANY of the SD550 software) AND it was fine for my computer.

In fact XP, just recognizes the SD550 as a new device with the USB cable to the SD550. The card reader I have for the USB is for 2.0 USB ports and also back compatible with 1.0.USB I also have a 2.0 USB hub but choose to connect the card reader on the front of my computer.

I choose also to take the card out each time as opposed to using the fragile card door, it looks like that could break off in time.

Enjoy your SD550 :)

LOL I don't install all the software each time I get a digital - not necessary.
