Going to stop shooting digital....

the fact is that film was a technology too, a evolutionary process, I'm sure film photographers 'back in the day' followed film development, much like we follow "digi-cam" development today.

From the very beginning of photography, the process has been evolutionary, with digital being the latest iteration. To me, using film at this point would be like shaking your fist at the wind.

Why is that? Just because you don't use film anymore does not make it less magical than it was and still is.

Besides, this is not just using film, this is an important part of history that will occur in the next two-three years.

If it were like shaking my fist at the wind, then I would not have the backing I do from the Smithsonian, Toyota and the Library of Congress.

This is huge dude, it has nothing to do with digital and everything to do about photography.

It is truly incredible how people think today.

works out really well for you.

It does sound a little like a midlife crisis. I had one when I was 43 - 34 years ago ! I gave up photography and studied portrait painting for two years full time at the Art Student's League in NYC. It was interesting but mostly I learned I wasn't a good enough draftsman to be a painter !

I wound up partnered up with a 19 year old girl in the medical transcription business, in which we remained, together, for 25 years. Kind of a strange kink in the road but not one I regret in the least.

One thing I did learn - you can never tell what's in the chocolate box, for sure.

Not that I am pointing this at anyone, but why does a documentary sound like a mid life crisis if it is shot on a brilliant film?

If told you that I was shooting a long term documentary on digital, would it get the same response?

I do this for a living, but this time, I had a great idea. Well, many people who are well connected in the art world are excited too and are in part, funding it.

Don't you all see? There are still people that love to use film and places that love to publish it, like National Geographic. David Burnett used a 4x5 speed graphic for this assignment.

Well the film I am giving tribute to is better than digital...far better. It is what made National Geographic, Time and Life what they are today. It can never be duplicated and has a very famous look.

I don't just want to do this, as the former CEO of CNN told me the other day.....I HAVE to do this.

What? I have told you a ton.

The gear, the funding, the plan, that it is about one of the most influential fims of all time.

For one thing, it's an original idea. You don't just go spouting it off on the net.

And for another thing, I am really surprised no one has said what it is yet, it's getting interesting to me to see just how much people know.......or don't know about photography, which happens to be a lot about history.

Do your homework. See if you can figure out what it is.
You've peaked interest from a lot of people, but really haven't
told us a thing.

Well, as far as the precise nature of the documentary is, I cannot venture, and I'll let that stay with you...though I suspect it is intimately connected with the film itself you will be using.

But I would surmise the medium is a certain world famous ISO 25 color transparency film with a particularly complicated development stage. :^)

......for awhile.

Not because I don't like it. I actually love it now that it is full
frame with brilliant image quality. The pair of 5D's I use, the
great primes, wow, what a whole new world, entirely. Good profits
too, which is why I am able to take a sebatical. The stuff is crazy
good in low light. There really is no such thing anymore, certainly
not bad light, just different.

I have been brewing something though, something really cool. When I
started the idea two years ago, I had just one Nikon FM3 and two
nice primes. Now I have 4 bodies and 11 lenses, underwater
housings, aerial gyros. I have the Nikon system again....the best
ever made. I also have a complete Hasselblad Xpan system...sick!

It's for a film, about a film, a brilliant film....the best ever
made in my opinion.

With the exception of key high paying clients that need me a bit of
the year, starting this Fall, I am not shooting digital for awhile.
It's a shame the digital gear will sit. I can't really sell but it
is time for a new chapter. A life defining one for me.

So for two years or more, I am outta here. I'll put my stuff in
storage, I rent out my place and I get as much grant money as I can
and I do something...that if I don't do right now........I will
spend my whole life in horrible regret over.

So yeah, Canon rules the roost, kind of. The two FM3's, two F4's
and a Hasselblad Xpan with all the glass, no contest. This film in
use, nooooooo contest. This could be bitchen.

It will be.

I'll come back to digital, it is not going anywhere....but the film
is and soon.

It's a good time to be a photographer......... such a good time..:-).
What a strange and disturbing message-- reading it was like overhearing Gollum prattle on in the dark about his Precious and the plans he had for the world when he got It back. Self-serving, self-absorbed, narcissistic, totally nuts. I imagine a strange, lonely person sitting in front of a mirror drinking cheap Scotch from a chipped glass, giving out the occasional knowing wink and nod as he raises the glass to his reflection. Brrrr...... Creeps me out, anyway.

I guess the moral of the story is to post first, THEN break the seal on the cheap booze. I do wonder, though, if the guy sees himself striding through digital shoots for expensive clients, 5D in each hand, brandishing them like a two-fisted gunfighter wielding his six-shooters in the old West as beautiful girls swoon at his feet. Oh yeah-- creepy is the word, alrighty...

What is his post all about?

Film rules? Is that what he's saying? Just didn't seem to make any sence...

Dave
I'm trimming out a my living room windows and readjusting my solar
panels today. And getting ready for dinner guests tonight.
I reorganized my AV equipment closet last weekend and this morning
discovered that the boot drive on my second PC appears to have died
(my main Photoshop machine). I was late getting into work this
morning because I had to take our two dogs to the vet for
vaccination.

and fun!

I'm sure we'll all hear about it when you're done. A sponsored trip somewhere, with the sole purpose of capturing beautiful images on some rare or highly praised film.. well, I'm jealous.

Good luck. If you can't say any more, can you reveal what type of film it is? I started in the digital era and don't know much about film. If I had to guess based on the info, I'd say slide film - Velvia, a very slow one. Am I close?

Been working with the one remaining lab in the US for that, have secured a batch of chemistry for 400 rolls to be last rolls ran in the US....ever.

Someone revealed the answer, poke around a bit.

I am trying to make this a fun thread for all, sans the head-in-sand crowd.

Is the film in question not Kodachrome 25, and its variants? I recall a thread on KM 25 nostalgia, that film ruled told of his intentions to use a feezer full of that wonderful film in a photographic tribute.
