I'm looking at these two:
Vanguard VS41 Flexible MiniTripod
Joby GP1-01P Gorillapod Flexible Tripod

Both are short (

Anyone had experience with either, or any handy, light tripod (larger is ok) that is great for light travel usage?

A detachable mount is probably important as the A620 has a plastic tripod mount threading, which I'm guessing is fragile. Has anyone accidentally stripped theirs?

Thanks,
Rich

I use this with my A620, an Ultapod II. I bring it whenever I travel with a compact camera.

there is a smaller version (I have one of those too!) but it's too small for an A620. also other variants on the theme http://www.pedcopods.com/products.htm

in concept I guess the gorillapod is similar, although the ultrapod has rigid legs just like a regular tabletop tripod. the V-channel legs and long velcro straps let you attach to any convenient post, railing, chair, etc. attach to a stick/branch, ski pole, etc as a makeshift temporary monopod.

not sturdy enough for a heavy camera like an SLR, but perfect for mid-sized P&S camera. doesn't replace a full-size tripod, but certainly ok for light travel use. it's also handy to attach the camera to things for unusual points of view - way up high or low, over a ledge, attached to moving object or sporting equipment(!), etc In combination with the A620's swivel LCD, you can use if for some unusual shots.
I find mine very useful, highly recommended.

pricier, the gorilla one in particular seems more versatile because
it appears to be able to grip to anything - check out these cool
demonstration photos on Amazon:

I second the Ultrapod I or II. Small, light, versatile and inexpensive and I can't think of what it can't do that the more gimmicky gorilla one will. Of course any of these devices short on a real tripod takes a little longer to aim.

Quantaray......no model number. Each leg is 3 and 3/4 inches long. Bought it at Wolf Camera $9.95 USD last December.

I havent stripped the threads on my A620. I dont understand the big fuss about people beeing scared of stripping the threads because of plastic. When actually putting it on the tripod, its easy to feel when it is properly inserted and vice versa. Just be a little more careful when doing it and there will be no problem.

The thing is that when it is time to put a camera on a tripod, there shouldnt be a rush to put it on rushing everything. Putting a camera on a tripod is supposed to be about taking time to take the pic and not rush into anything so there should never be any concern about breaking the plastic threads.
