One light studio portraits....let's see 'em

This shot was one of about 60 I took the last few days at my church's Vacation Bible School. The setup is as follows: subject positioned about three feet from the background (a sheet of cardboard with the sun painted on it), a 300 ws BOSH strobe set to half power with a 24" x 36" softbox attached and positioned about three feet away at 45° camera right. A silver reflector positioned about a foot from the subject camera left. Camera was positioned about four feet from the subject and set to 1/125 @ f/14.

Here is another shot. I moved the light to the front of the subject and positioned it beside the camera. I raised the light until it touched the ceiling (about 8') and angeled it down about 45°. I placed the reflector on the floor in front of the subject. The camera was set to 1/125 @ f/11.

Regards, Phillip @ Keepsake,

No measuring angles, no crazy COI's, just plain ol photography. Tell me now, do you really see the light?

Was trying out my gear for the first time as I've no experience with studio lights. This was with one SB camera right and reflector.

The background is a little grey because I only used one light.

Awesome shot!

I assume you used a medium SB to the models' left without a reflector? Mind sharing which B&W conversion technique you used? If you didn't shoot B&W, that is.

'Can't you see I'm an amateur, dammit?'

I never realized how many great shots might have been taken only using one light!

Would it be safe to say...

...that for someone that has never used a studio strobe and does not have the $$$ to buy a set of multiple ABs & related equipment...
...that it would be worth buying 1 AB800 with a large softbox?

After seeing all these one-light photos... I'm seriously considering going that route.
