...most of the money was already earmarked for the flash anyway.

But, more importantly, as compulsions go...this one is pretty benign and will over time pay for itself.

Kiss him a lot and enjoy, (well both the kissing and the equipment)

...this is of course not true, and the comment even seems vaguely sexist to me...but what the hell, it is all in good fun. And I'm happy...

As you have your red room, I now have a blue room...but really blue, with white ceiling and trim...several shades above robin eggshell to Bayou Blue, of which I now have a spare gallon that I never used, to something called Handsome hue...two shades above Bayou.

The yellow is still troublesome...I went with Sunny Yellow today, but I may again have an unused gallon sitting around. If Lemon Ice is too light, but nice enough, then Sunny seems too deep. Tomorrow I'll pick up a gallon of Citron Ice, the shade between Sunny and Lemon.

The yellow is of extreme importance because I think I can go a long way with the right Yellow...maybe even do three rooms, hallways and stairs in yellow and bright white.

This is progress of sorts.

Well, I have my red room, and my orangy-yellowish dining room, and a bright lemon-yellow room that has one wall that is grass green on the bottom and sky blue on top, along with a sky blue ceiling (that's the boys' room and it's got a Go Dog Go theme. :) And then there's the dark teal wall that runs the entire length of the place from the dining room down to the bedrooms. And boy does this all sound hideous! LOL!

...now your house sounds colorful!

Me? I'm just trying to find some middle ground.

But color does, I think, affect our spirit...our happiness.

I like the idea of a room having one wall a different color...but that is courage beyond what I seem to have...lol

But thanks for the ideas.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all of the wonderful commentary and discussion on the three images I posted. I had a chance to read them around midnight last night, but I was too fried to offer any sort of intelligent responses or take action on your suggestions. I'm buried in work right now, so it might be a few days before I'm able to respond or correct some flaws in the images.

I do think a reshoot of "wtw" is in order, but I'm not sure about the other two. I think a possible crop of "witw" along the thirds line would help, so I'll take some time and see if I can get it right. I'm on the fence about "sol" regarding cropping and/or reshooting with a larger DOF, for the reasons that have been already discussed. I think I will reshoot it anyway, then post the larger DOF shot to see what you guys think, but I don't think I'm going to like it more. Part of the allure was to have some of the corners and edges along the very top and bottom fade out, and I was pleased with how that part of the image turned out, at least.

Anyway, more on this later. Gotta run.

Thanks again,
jb

I've always avoided anything but very muted colors for room walls and especially ceilings because I want the lighting in the room to be maximized.

But reading all of this makes me wonder if I'm missing out on something.

Maybe repainting at least one room with some bright colors wouldn't be such a bad thing :)

But I guess that the way any place I have control over ends up being totally cluttered, maybe having bland walls is not so bad.

I always like seeing rooms that are painted nicely and have been decorated in a cohesive way but my problem with most of what I see on TV or in magazines is that I cannot imagine that anyone actually lives in these rooms and manages to keep them looking that way.

What I need is a huge house with sections that can be totally pitted-out by me actually using and living in them, and then some other sections that can serve as the "museum" areas. Those areas could be decorated nicely and serve as entertaining and relaxing spaces.

I think I could keep them clean and looking good if I had my "hidden" areas to actually work in.

I've also always wanted to just have a large warehouse. That way I won't have to ever throw anything away but I also won't have to be tripping over it :)

Let's see:

Machine shop.
Wood shop.
Electronics shop.
Garage/auto shop.
Warehouse.
Offices.
Bedrooms.
Bathrooms (all with waterproof walls and sloped floors with floor drains).
Kitchen (huge, with walls and floors as above).
Home Theater/Listening room.
Living room.
Dining room.
Hot tub/pool room :)
Photo studio.
Gallery area....

What am I leaving out here?

Ok, ok, back to planet earth again. Maybe I'll just settle for trying to clean out my office this weekend :)

I got so sick of 8 yrs of ALL WHITE.

I've done that in the past - all white with one rich color. That doesn't take much guts. ;) Now I push the envelope; my daughter's room has two lavender walls, opposite eachother, the third wall is blue, and the wall opposite that is blue on the bottom and dark pinkish-red on top, where they meet it's a large wavy line. Around the whole top of the room is a hand painted white border with red stripes. These sound so ugly when they're being described, but look so nice.

Then take it easy on the first attempt. We have done it twice. In our previous house, the living room had three off-white walls and one wall in burgundy. Her current office room has three light green walls and one red wall. It is really a striking effect, for so simple a change in decor.

I thought the picture of your place looked stupendous in white with the clean wood floors.

Love that I can just dial in flash compensation without having to touch any other buttons. I'm just oozing over the way I can quickly press a button then dial in the flash ratio when I'm using the 420EX as a slave! And how sweeeeeet it is that I can screw the 420 onto a lightweight light stand, with an umbrella, and off I go carrying a small studio setup right in my backpack!!!

I also picked up a flash bracket and cable for it, yesterday, along with another 2 gb Sandisk Extreme III card. This brought me to an unbelievable realization that I believe I've just hit the $10,000.00 mark in camera equipment purchases! YIKES!!! That doesn't even include the $5,000 worth of computer related spend! I think I heard someone mention, way back when I first started this, that photography is an expensive hobby! LOL! I also recall telling hubby, when I had the 10D, 28-135, and 75-300, that I was "all set" and had "everything I need"! LOL! I keep thinking that and then something calls my name! LOL!

Ok, so now I just need a couple used, cheap, slave flashes and a polarizer for the 24-70. I think that's it! ;)

BTW, the 580EX seems to have added a bit of heft to the weight of the rig. In a few minutes I'll be hooking it all up to the flash bracket. Then Saturday, I get to try it all out on a party I was hired for. Methinks mine arms whilst be tired! LOL!

But it could be a lot worse.

I figure that I could have a fishing boat, or some snowmobiles, or jet-skis, or four-wheelers, or a motorcycle. All of those things can cost you a heck of a lot more than camera gear!

Hey, I want all of that too :)

I think you'll like the flash. Having the off camera cord for it is essential too.

I want to get a flash bracket at some point. I have been hand-holding the flash a lot and it's tough to shoot one-handed sometimes.

What kind of a bracket did you get and do you like it? Or is it too soon to tell? I'd want it for macro work as well as for more "normal" uses but that's probably asking too much.

Have fun with the new gear!

The two fireplug shots are gone ("Blade of Grass at Rest" is in Exhibition, "IOWA" is in, well, maybe it went to Iowa somewhere).

My wife loved the new "Feather Fallen," but did not care at all for "Avian Art." Comments would be welcome.

Lonnit,

I'm short on disposable income at the moment, and I have a bunch of gear that I want to buy. (don't we all :) I'm thinking of challenging myself with shooting what I would think would be targeted as stock shots to see if I can (eventually) earn enough for a few of the L's I've always wanted. I'm curious about a few things. If you've got time, or if anyone else has thoughts/comments on this, can you fill in some of the blanks?

1) Do you shoot for a particular target market (stock, wall art, etc), or do you just do what amuses you take whatever cash comes your way?

2) How much of a portfolio did you build before "going public"?

3) Do you have any tips on how to handle rights management? I know you have strong opinions on RM for all of your images, I'm wondering if you had to draw up your own terms or if there's a standard arrangement that you find acceptable. (and do you have any links so I can try and decipher the legalese?)

4) Is this something that you can do intermittantly? I get buried in work for a week or two at a time, then will have 2-3 days free of comp time, then another few weeks of racing around, then free again, etc ad nauseam. If you don't update your portfolio for a month or two, do you get left behind?

...I went to a cocktail party opening (free food, open bar) of the Photography of George Hurell on the Sundeck Gallery of the QueenMary last night...It was a nice way to spend an hour or so, but I was introduced to...it turns out the owner of all this work, and I asked what kind of camera was sitting on the table.

"A D200?" I asked, adding, "It's a nice camera, I've shot it, I thought the colors were a little soft, but then I am, almost foolishly so, a saturation guy," and I laughed.

There were people milling about and a woman told me, "It's a D70."

"Oh?" I said, turning to my companion, "humm, only a D70?"

Oh, gads, the wife of the owner of the camera, who, incidentially was also the person putting on the show...really went Medieval on me. "What do you mean, It's only a D70????????!" She said this loud enough that conversation stopped.

I dug my way out of this hole....but it was very embarrassing...I don't know why I said, "Only a D70," but I did. Maybe because all these people were fabulously wealthy...way beyond my league...well, I felt stupid.

But, if you're down around the QueenMary, the show will be going on for the next month or so. Nice glamour stuff from the golden age of Hollywood.

(also, maybe I was a little put out because they confiscated my camera at the door...lol).

Best Wishes,
