Awesome Airplane Picture (not mine, but cool)

What appeared to be so unbelieveable about it anyway?

There are plenty of airports that I can think of where a public road runs right past the end of a runway, sometimes the traffic is stopped by traffic lights, sometimes not.

The airport at Pythagorio, on the island of Samos is like that, sometimes (according to the wind direction) aircraft are either landing across the road like in the photo or are throttling up to take of in the other direction.

I have been blasted by chippings from the runway (and my car too) in this situation and urban myth has it that some guy was blasted across the road and onto the beach beyond .......

Andy.

it was America's Funniest Videos (or whatever they call it now). A plane was parked with its butt against the fence, ready for take-off. At launch time, all hell broke loose and the people on the beach were blasted with a hurricane-force wind, losing umbrellas and getting covered with sand — and/or getting pushed toward the water. With those mountains in the background, I guess they have to use all the runway they can to get enough lift.

The area is real, I used to know which island the airport is at but I've forgotten. I have friends that run a commercial air charter service and they have shown me photographs they've taken there.

There is also a web site for either the airport or island, when I find it I'll post it.

That's correct, it's Princess Juliana Airport on St Marteen in the Dutch Side. This airport is the only International one on the island so it also serves the French side of the Island.
It is in the Dutch Part of Sint Maarten.

...why are you calling that an "awesome" photo? To my eyes it looks
like nothing more than a snapshot, and I just don't see what I'm
missing.
Do you have a picture like that in your portfolio?

The image is awesome because of the situation, not the technical merits of picture taking...not the framing (although the composition is not BAD for a "snapshot")

The picture is awesome to me because I have NEVER seen anything like it before.

I apologize for my narrow view of the world...it seems that others here get out more often and see planes flying this low to beaches full of half nude people.

No, not exactly, although that is absolutely not relevant. I also do not have a photo of, say, your bathroom, but I still wouldn't call one "awesome". =)

I disagree (obviously). If the situation was a rare one, then I would agree with you, but given that it's a frequent and accessible occurance (planes come in that way all the time at that location, and just about anyone who really wanted to see it could do so), I do not.
The picture is awesome to me because I have NEVER seen anything

Fair enough. There is the real answer to my question.

Or others use the word awesome differently. Or others are not awed by the same things you are. Plenty of possibilities.

Why such a sarcastic response to what I wrote was a serious question?

If you go to http://www.airliners.net , you can see a whole bunch of pictures from that airport in St. Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles. It's quite famous for such pictures. Look at the ones where the 747's are in the same position...awesome!

There is a new one there where a KLM 747 is about 50' past the fence when it hits the runway, how's that for close! People are standing at the fence.

Yes, most of the pictures from this airport aren't something that you'd put in a competition, but the're still impressive to convey how close the enormous planes come to the beach.
