Let's see some your one light studio portraits along with any details or descriptions you would like to provide.

I just started taking a portrait studio class and I am looking for examples and inspiration. I promise to post something of my own once I can get into the class studio.

While we are used to seeing regular contributions from a small group of posters, perhaps this could be any opportunity to see what everybody out there is doing (including you frequent flyers that inspire us so often).

This was taken yesterda. I just happen to have a wide shot of it so you can see what was really going on. One Light. Medium SB camera right. I had her girlfriend flag off some light from the background area. I had her mother, hold a 4x5 sheet of white foamcore camera left to add some fill. Walmart fan for air.

Regards, Phillip @ Keepsake,

No measuring angles, no crazy COI's, just plain ol photography. Tell me now, do you really see the light?

Phillip,

This is the first time I've noticed you using this set. How much use do you get from it and how long do you think you will hold on to it? Do you worry that such recognizable elements would detract from your uniqueness as a photographer? With all that land you have and natural settings, you're the last person I would think would get one of these.

None of this is meant as a putdown, I love your work. I just want to know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Wayne

Pfiltz you must be a mindreader!! I was just thinking yesterday if it would be too much to ask you to post a few wide shots to show your set up, and now you do it. Sometimes a picture speaks better than words.

You mention foamcore quite often, do you use that more or less than "factory made" reflectors? Please continue to post a few wide shots from time to time. As many others, glad your back..

Thanks,

John

Phillip,
Thanks for the pic and set-up info. Three questions for 'ya..

(1) What guided your decision to end up at f/8 and 1/200th with this shot?
(2) What is your focus technique? Center point focus and recompose?
(3) What ISO are you usually shooting at in the studio?

Thanks.

Bibthecat,
Cool shot. Mind describing the lighting and setup?

One from a recent shoot - the boyfriend of a glamour model friend.

I use the set from time to time. I figure I'll keep it since it's paid for ;) Cost me nothing now. It's a perminant set. B/G is attached to the wall. Other stuff is moved where ever I need it. I look at this stuff just like I would if I were placing them near a wooden wagon, tree, swing, etc.. outside. Just a prop.

Besides, it's only 98 today. There won't be any shooting outside... ;) I have 35 acres of which, some things are setup to shoot if I need it, but no way am I taking someone out there to shoot in this heat.

Same kind of lighting. One light, foamcoare for fill.

I call it foamcore. What it really is, the insulation that is put up on a house prior to siding or brick. Comes in different thicknesses. I dont mind using reflectors outside, but this stuff is so light, and easy to move around the studio, I use it alot. I have several different sizes, that's been either trimmed down, or just plain old broke off. I painted them flat white on one side.

I'm shooting another gal tomorrow. I'll try to remember to get a setup shot or two.

Here is another one light shot. 550EX and SB.

I like shooting around f8 so I don't have to be too concerned with DOF. I may shoot 2.8 or what ever, but that's usually by design. I like to shoot around 200 in the studio as well.

(2) What is your focus technique? Center point focus and recompose?
Center spot always and recompose. Just the way I do it.

(3) What ISO are you usually shooting at in the studio?
Always 100 ISO

Thanks.

Heres a mix of different styles using one light IN studio. Occasionally a bg light is used, but the subject is lit with just one.

With reflector and one light:

Some words to live by....'Use as little light as possible. Start with one light and see how it looks and ask yourself, 'Do I need a fill?' If you light everything, you destroy the mood. It's always better to start out with one light source and really think about where you are going to put it. If you put up three lamps at once, you're just going to get confused.' - Chris Tribelhorn

what is your light set up? I mean what kind of modifiers are you using? softboxes?

cheers
