Hi all:

I have taken some Whistler Pics with my G1 a few days ago and I thought it would be great if some of you experts could give me some criticism on it (since I am a beginner). I shot all my shots in P mode. However, it seems really weird. From reading the posts on this forum, I thought focus problems can be eliminated (or lessened) if I use 1/60sec or less while holding the camera without a tripod. But I shot shots at 1/60sec or less and when I zoomed in to 100%, they still looked out of focus. Is it because the subject is far away? Anway, the link is " http://www.pbase.com/dafung/whistler_bc . Thank you in advance for any criticism.

What have you done to the images, prior to posting? Any edge-sharpening or unsharp mask? Contrast/levels adjusment? The one I looked at could use that, it seemed. I didn't see any motion blur, though. The resolving power of the lens/ccd will cost you some detail in distant or fine ojbects, but not much.

I haven't done anything to the photos before posting. This is right from the camera. I'll try the stuff you suggested. Thanks.

Hey DF,

Were you visiting or do you live here? Just wondering. Also, take a look at my most recent shot, taken this morning at about 10:00am.

No no, I don't live there. I live about a 2 hour drive from Whistler. See, I like your photo. With mine, if I try not to overblow the sky, then the stuff underneath the mountain is darkened. I think I need a filter or something. How did you shoot yours?

Where do you live? I lived in Vancouver (Richmond, actually) most of my life and moved up here 3 weeks ago for a job with Tourism Whistler.

As for this photo, the conditions were such that the mountains were illuminated so there wasn't a huge contrast between land and the sky. I also had a circular polarizer on the G1 at the time of this shot, hence the nice blue sky.

To Ken and DF/Fung/Danial,

Ken,
Just out of curiousity, do you ever leave your camera in your
car when travelling or even just running an errand for 30 minutes or so?

BTW, nifty shot of Whistler.
---------------------------------------------

DF,

How was your trip? What bag did you eventually purchase for your
trip? And, lastly, did you leave your camera in the car(?), the cooler(?)
or did the camera go with you?

Df, I thought your pictures where quite good, perhaps you should
approach the Whistler Tourism Agency. Now, if you only had a contact.

BTW, Ken is a Canon G? master and all his advice should be adhered to
without question.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope you both have a safe and Happy Holiday season.

JRS, you still remember about the bag question! For my trip, I used a rather cheap old bag that really didn't have any good insulation at all. I tried most of the time not to leave the camera in the car (I had it around my neck most of the time). But when I did have to leave it in the car, I put it in a cooler with me. But I'll have to buy a good insulated bag sometime soon as I may be going on a slightly longer trip this summer. Any good suggestions? Perhaps something that resembles more like a backpack?

I was in whistler a year ago August. It's neat to see the seasonal difference. I shot film with my little Olympus Stylus Epic back then.

We just got our G2, would love to bring that along next time. I would never think of lugging my Canon EOS system on a trip like that but the G2 is compact enough.

Your pics look great, it's really a matter of taste regarding what effect you want to have. If you want to avoid blowing out the bright sky, set ISO 50 in the menu, which gives you much greater dynamic range than the higher ISO P mode would otherwise choose. The drawback might be a shutter speed too long to handhold, but it's well worth a try.

Also, big beautiful scenery like Whistler begs for panoramas. Use the excellent G2 stitch-assist mode which makes it easy, and effectively multplies yourr resolution in the final image.

Yes I have, but I always tuck it away somewhere.

Thanks. The mountain is actually Blackcomb but the town is still Whistler.

I don't know about a "master" but that would be a good way to put it if you are trying to flatter me.--Ken W.www.quantumarts.com
