Safari Vehicle Worry...

I would think the personal vechicle is the best. My family and I are leaving this Saturday for South Africa photo safari in Sabi Sands. We have a personal land rover and guide. We have been told that since we are the only ones in the vechicle we can go and stay as long as we want in any place. Cool!

Does anyone know about the crime in South Africa? I have been assured it is better, but that was from the tour agency. I am taking my wife and 11 and 14 year old sons.

I have my Ambien for the flights already packed!

I have put the request in, and just waiting back on confirmation now!

I have decided that it really is the best option, and on top of the cost of the trip as it is, doesnt seem too unreasonable.

Thanks again to everyone for helping end off the day with a smile, considering that it started with panic
Im even more excited now.

Jim, let me know how you get on when you get back! I would love to see the galleries + shots you get.

What lenses are you taking if you dont mind me asking?

I have the Canon 70-200 IS 2.8, 300 IS 2.8 and the 100-400 for the big glass. I was told carrying the 300 2.8 would be worth it for the early morning and evening shots. I have a 1.4x and 2x converter for this lens also since my camera is full frame with no conversion factor.

This is my first trip to Africa but I was told this combo would be ok.

the last 2yrs, if u send me an email, I can share whatever info I have from my trips.

U need to have your own vehicle, it doesnt matter whether it is a bus or rangerover, but DONT take a vehicle with other people in it outside your group or even more than 2 others. there wont be enough room.
each person should have access to both sides and top and bottom.

windows slide open, u wont be shooting through glass unless when u are 3ft from a growing lion:) and a little afraid:)
I have a couple of galleries on my site from my trips if u want to see also.

I just returned from safari in TZ a few weeks ago. More companies tend to use the safari buses because they're cheaper, but some use real 4WDs. It generally just depends on the operator. The company I used only uses 4WD jeeps. They were a great company over all, not just their vehicles.

We had Land Cruisers.

Having said that, and having taken a monopod myself, I found it not of any use. You'd be far better just taking a beanbag to balance your lenses on and keep them from banging the rails. The windows in our vehicles opened.

Enjoy your safari!

Cheers,
Rachel
So I was all set for my safari in october, had my solution for the
monopod + 100-400mm canon lens, and how to use the jeep/landrover
for rests and get a good vantage point etc.

Then last night I went on to the site somak holidays, who the
safari is booked through and saw this image....... Im very much
hoping this isnt what the safari will be in... I cant see myself in
the back of a minibus like that shooting a 400mm through glass
now.......

Does anyone know if this is just a random image and they do use
jeeps still for the safari's, or is this more than likely what we
will travel in? I have mailed the company and still waiting a
response.

Thanks for anyone with experience on this one and can comment
