help w/ flash and live concert

Hello! I have been taking pics at live shows for a while, and am slowly working my way towards something I like. I have been attempting something lately, but have never been able to find the right balance to get something I can really be proud of. Anyways, what I am attempting to get is to make the subject as well lit, and detailed as possible, and the background as dark as possible.

The gear I'm working with is a D50, a 35mm 1:2D, a SB600, and a sc-28 if that will help.

Here is a pic I took the other night that comes close to what I am trying to get.

Although I took other pics that same night with the same settings that didn't come out quite like that. I'm going somewhere soon that has all white alls (the same place as in the pic). Does anyone have any tips for somewhere like this? Thanks in advance!

by the way, all my settings are avaliable on the fllickr site. I just used ttl on the sb-600.

Some possibilities - experiment with various combinations:

• Stop down - let the flash do more work.
• Switch to center-weighted or spot metering.
• Use a longer focal length lens.
• Use manual zoom on the flash and narrow the flash angle (i.e., use longer zoom setting than the lens you're using)
