3rd party cable release

Ha ha. B&H support said to "wiggle" the 3rd Party remote control in the camera's socket.

...and then it worked.

For anyone who's interested. B&H just released a generic wireless remote for Canon and Nikon by ZIGVIEW.

It's very slick. Works wired or wireless.

The Canon model is R2-SRC Twin1 - Transmitter/Receiver.

Works GREAT!!! (Now that I figured it out.)

and so far am happy with it. It should survive hundreds of insertions and removals and Canon won't have a thing to say in the event any damage occurs at the connection point. My criticism of it is that it is too easy to slide the button into extended mode. When it happens, I wonder why the camera mirror hasn't returned and that I can't review the result on the LCD. Then, it's "Doh!"

Sorry if this sounds stupid but where do you plug in the Adidt M1 into the 5D/30D? The video out socket? Or is there another adaptor that I need?

The Adidt M1 pin sure doesn't look like it'll fit the properly designed remote control teminal N3 type socket on both cameras.

Thanks.

I assume you are talking about the photos in the ebay ad. One of the photos erroneously shows the socket connector for the 300D/350D remote. The correct photo is for the remote that "works as RS-80N3" (for the 30D/5D/1D bodies) is here:

while the remote that "works as RS-60E3" (for 300D/350D bodies) is here:

So you insert the r3 jack into the 5D's/30D's video out socket?

I'm looking at item #4 in their manual -
http://www.adidt.com/English/knowledge/R3/default.htm

Not an N3 type jack.
The adidt remote comes in two forms, one with the RS-80N3's jack (for the 5D/30D) and one with the RS-60E3's jack (for the 300D/350D). I bought one for my 20D, and I can definitely tell you that it has an R3 jack, as you can see from my photo below:

The diagram in the manual obviously shows the jack for the RS-60E3, not the RS-80N3.

Thanks for posting these new links.

Now I'm sure that they have two models and will order the correct one. They even have it up to 5M! Thanks!

... not to let this guy borrow any of my equipment :-)
I use my cable release every time I shoot, have
submerged it in freezing water, slammed it in a car door (the
release itself, not just the cable), and dragged it on a highway
for 10 miles ("What's that sound?") ...

I have the ADIDT M1, purchased from B&H for $40, which works great with my 5D. I did have one question though for other users of this remote who might know the answer to this. There seems to be some sort of jack port on the side of the button housing. Does anyone know exactly what plugs into this port and what it might do?

If I'm not wrong, its for your insert a pin jack version (not N3) and it can work two cameras at the same time.

See 3rd para - http://www.adidt.com/English/knowledge/M1/default.htm

That's my understanding just from reading this. I don't own one yet nor tried it. There's a 5M length model which I'm interested in.

Mr. T, apparently you weren't paying attention when I detailed the
abuse I put my cable release through, but the bigger question is,
why does what I think matter so much to you? I'm just a guy with
an opinion, no need to get so worked up about it. Obviously, $50
is a lot of money to you, so I'm happy you've found a solution that
works for you.
Obviously, $50 is very little money to you. Since you are a heavy user of remote cable, I might expect you to carry a spare = $100 worth of remote cables. Seriously, if you buy a knock-off for $10 and it works, why not use it in the field? If it fails, you can your $10 spare cable, and if that one fails, you can use your shutter finger until you get another one. Why not buy and try a $10 cable, and if it works okay, buy 4 more - total investment = 1 Canon cable, and you're all set for cable losses and failures.

Well, I went ahead and ordered the Adidt cable release. While I agree that lenses, flashes, etc. can impact overall photo quality, there just isn't much to a cable release to go wrong. I spent a whopping 99 cents for a brand new one (OK, that isn't totally true - I paid $12.00 for the shipping). It arrived today and works perfectly.

Thanks to everyone who provided input.
