Hi Bulbmogul, considering ur zeal for new 200.8 lens, i did a search and found out that a few virgin copies are still available. Have a look at this link:

After conversion it comes out to about $6890.30 :)
At this rate u can get 2 used 200.8 lens from nearby cham camera ;)

But since u ar some sort of antiquity items collector i am sure u would like to go for new one. In case u need help, feel free to mail me. ( I am still a student and no way connected to that site)

and forgot to mention, this lens is being sold by canon Korea(not some grey market left on the shelf for long time). So i guess it will be servicable by Canon Korea.

Is there a good chancec that Canon could have a few of these still
left in there inventory? I have a friend that told me he is going
to check with Canon of Canada to see if they still may have one .
My buddy works for Henrys Camera Main office and is going to look
into the matter. What did this lens cost new when it was sold at
B&H etc? I really would like to find a NOS one if it is availible.
The 200 f/1.8 is a very specialized design. I once owned the manual focus version of the Nikon 200 f/2 (fabulous lens), so I'm familiar with what this class of lens can do, and what it's for. Aside from a few specialized sports applications, it's very good for blowing out distracting backgrounds in fashion photography, outdoor lifestyle. and some specialized outdoor portrait work. There is no point in using this lens stopped down further than f/2 or f/2.8. It's all about the wide aperture.

You need GOOD technique and experience to work at this focal length, with such shallow depth of field. You already have the 300 f/2.8, which is sort of the "learner's driving permit" for getting sharp photos with a tele that has super-shallow DOF. I wouldn't recommend even thinking about a 200 f/1.8 until you're consisently getting razor-sharp photos, wide open at f/2.8, with that 300mm lens.

If that's not a consideration, then you're just collecting lenses, and keeping a specialized item out of the hands of someone who could really use it.

P.S. I have a feeling Canon might have an IS version in the pipeline anyway. As I understand it, the only reason they discontinued this lens, was to comply with the Euro leaded glass rules. It's a prestige design; Nikon has the equvalent in current production, and I don't think Canon can afford to keep this particular slot vacant in their lens lineup.

Hopefully Canon will leave the IS off it's not need nor desirable in a lens like this which excells at low light stop action shooting.

IS only helps if what you are shooting isn't moving.

Are you nuts? IS would be fantastic on a 200/1.8. I have one and it can be somewhat difficult to hand-hold.

And while true it is a great lens for low-light sports, it can also be a fantastic lens for non-moving objects when a narrow DOF and a bit of compression is desired.

Having a large aperture and IS is a win-win situation. The only obvious down-side would be the cost.

If Canon does have plans to re-introduce this lens it wouldn't surprise me if they went the Nikon-route and brought out a 200/2 IS. It would still meet the needs of 95% of the 200/1.8 users while being a bit lighter. It probably won't be any cheaper as the original 200/1.8 only sold for around $3999.

for BM that is. It is to add to his collections. Soon there will be the 600mm and the 1200mm into his own Canon L lens museum...

Also we should let him know about the Canon 50mm f1.0L. A mint copy surfaces in eBay once in a while ...

Hi there, Many thanks for your response and help into this matter. I am very interested in snagging one of these virgin copies of this marvelous lens. I have a friend that is going to check and see if it still mabe availible from Canon of Canada as he works for one of the largest Camera Shops in Canada. Did this lens have autofocus or was it strictly a Manual Focus lens? Also why is the price so much higher in Korera as I was told that this lens sold for about $4500.00 US Dollars when it was in the stores..

Or just add IS to the 200/2.8L. And I'm not nuts, I just don't see the need for IS 99.99% of the time if you want a razor low light DOF use a tripod since the subject isn't moving anyway.

How would find out if Canon of USA may still have a NOS Copy of this lens in inventory? How much did this lens sell for at B&H when they had it in there inventory? The urge to aquire is quite acute..!

Geez. Are you not reading the responses to your own posts? There ARE NO NOS copies of this lens. The 200 1.8, which as was pointed out in an earlier post never had IS, and was discontinued about 7 years ago. Get over it and leave the lens to people who actually know how to use it. Its not some kind of a trophy.

There are none left in Canon USA or Europe's inventory.

The reason for their high price has nothing to do with Korea, it is simply one of the few Aisian submarkets that may have one or two their inventory, which may have been a result of some quantity annexed during manufacture for special purposes that was simply never made avaialble.

If this is indeed a NIB example, $6600 is not, by any means, out of line with current going rates. Some of the high pricing can be attributed to the weak dollar vs won. This is simply how much these thiings cost nowadays. By comparison, I recently bought mine for just under $5,000. It was optically and cosmetically pristine and complete with the lens trunk, unopened documentation, and all acccessories in equally new condition. The only flaw is a small scuff to the chrome on one area of the lens trunk; and the only item it is missing would be its factory box which, like the other supertele primes, I believe to be a standard cardboard distribution box, as these wre not the kind of items that would tend to occupy store shelves in quantity.

As for the high price, it is because there are none left (virtually) in the retail supply chain, only about 8,000 were ever made, and it happens to be considered the sharpest EF lens Canon ever made. Based on first-hand experience, I agree with that claim. It is no longer just a lens; it's a commodity.

Huh? Calling for a tripod is hardly an answer considering the 200 1.8 has such tremendous indoor and available light potential... shooting environments that are often unwelcoming to shooting from a fixed position or with less mobility than shooting handheld affords.
Or just add IS to the 200/2.8L. And I'm not nuts, I just don't see

Hello Michael, Well its obvious you also cant read the English Language in this Thread. One of the posters in Korea just sent the link to Canon of Korea and they have a NOS Unopened Copy of htis lens. So before you start typing your statements, you should really have hd your ducks all in a row or should have just passed up the ignorant comment. And 2nd of all. How do you listen on the computer? I would hink it would be reading if I am correct?
