Challenge 72: Found Abstracts

The topic of Challenge 72 is Found Abstracts. I won't attempt a definitive guideline for "abstract". There's plenty of good information on the web for abstract art and abstract photography. Perhaps we'll get a rousing discussion going on the genre of abstract photography. For myself, abstract means a focus on line, color, shape, form, and texture without regard to a literal interpretation of the photographed subject which contributed those elements. Perhaps you'll agree, perhaps you'll disagree.

A few links to get the mental juices flowing:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/abstrato/pool/
http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/abstractphotography.htm
http://www.d-weinberg.com/

Those are but a very few of the resources available for reference and study. Please feel free to add additional links.

What does the FOUND mean? Just that. You cannot go into your "studio" and arrange subject(s) for your image. Composites are fine, any level of post processing image manipulation is fine, but you can't create the subject of your image(s). You must find the subject. They may be in your home (cats, objet d'art), they may be naturally found in the wild (leaves, ice crystals), they may be man-made (architectural abstracts). The only restriction is that you must start with found items.

Have fun with the search and have fun shooting!

Michael

I meant to address image titles in the opening post. These can be "kind o' difficult"[tm] with abstract images, so I wanted to suggest that you not worry about them very much. I propose a convention of using "untitled #1", "untitled #2", etc, for those images where titles just don't easily fit.

Congratulations again, Michael and Sergio!

Michael, the new challenge topic is super and I wanted to remark (tongue-very-much-in-cheek, of course) that you seem to have made this "hosting job" a near permanent appointment, not so? :-)

[ You were host for 67, again for 70, and now for 72... a reflection of your consistently high-quality work. ]

Looking forward to this one, and then let's rig the voting so that we can see what Lonnit had planned. Only kidding. :-) -)

Regards jnconradie

Hope to be able to participate this time.

Be very careful to avoid duplication of titles. As I recall two pictures with the exact same title cause the voting booth problems.

Interesting topic! I have at least one for Exhibition but this isn't something I usually do so it will be a real challenge for me. I'm glad you won - you're an excellent host - maybe we should elect you "host for life"!!! ;-)

"Abstract. 5. Fine arts. Of, or pertaining to, the formal aspect of art, emphasizing lines, colors, generalized or geometric forms, etc., esp. with reference to their relationship with one another."

I would say that that shot qualifies under this definition.

One does not achieve success by being at the right place at the right time, but rather by being ready when the right place and time present themselves for your inspection.

I would say it should be more indistinguishable if the aim is non-representational abstract art. But abstract art has loads o' classifications and I tend to think of this image as representational abstract. Bottom line, I think it qualifies but that is just my opinion...you or others may differ.

I've been doing some quick reading specifically about abstract photography (stayed up way too late last night) and there appears to be plenty of differing opinions out there. I spose there's no reason for photography to be any different than any other art medium.

Michael
Why are you leaning on the fence as no? Why do you think it
doesn't qualify?
I guess b/c it's a scene. It's recognizable. Shouldn't abstract be
more indistinguishible?
