fake Canon cameras

Can you at least write more than one line of text next time explaining just what the heck you are talking about?

I'm thinking you should definitely return your 5D ASAP and quickly return to the Canon Talk forum.

After all, it's probably a FAKE anyway.

i am in the business of import distribution and retail, basically i have recently bumped into the oportunity of getting 1d's and 5d's at rediculous prices, i mean the markup is 300%.
as far as i know generally the markup on electrical goods is in the 20-30%
from wholesale to retail.
my concern is that there maybe fakes out there.

in china a whole company was replicated und started producing NEC products

But I am sure it's not as good as the Pro-1 though. Because the LCD can't flip out. :-D

yes i'm very aware of these.

last year when i worked in an industrial (pro) camera store in australia we had a customer come in wanting his 1ds MK11 repaired, just small issues, so we sent it to canon and they called us and said that the problems with the camera were that they didn't make it. it was fake. the guy did buy it in honk kong at around 50% of what they retail in australia. it was a very good fake, we were fooled. but i never saw images out of it.

LMAO!!! That's classic! Thanks for posting that!!

--HA! That's great! I like the HTTP button, what a timesaver when you are shooting and you need to ask someone on dpreview whether you should use Av or Tv, ISO 100 or 1600, a 16 mm or a 600 mm, to take a picture of your cat or your kid!

If there were knock off 1 series cameras out there we'd have heard about it before now.

ISO 9600, why do you need built in flash :-D

For OP, the only problem is that the LCD doesn't flip out like his PRO-1.

If there was such a thing as an entirely fake "Canon" camera in Hong Kong people would know. I live there. No one knows. Not newspapers. Not photographers. No one.

There are grey market goods. That's a different thing.

Even in China it would cost more to tool a factory up to create a significant number of such fakes than could possibly make the camera worth it.

This has an urban legend feel about it. One of those friend of a friend stories.

Call me sceptical, but when I see one, I'll believe it.

Probably just simple chinese no-name P&S cameras with Canon decals attached.

It's a little worrying to me that somebody "in the business of import distribution and retail" wouldn't immediately suspect the goods to be stolen when offered at 'ridiculous prices'. That is a far more likely scenario than somebody setting up a business to manufacture fake versions.
