Olga wanted some casual outdoor pictures for her portfolio so I said why not----it'll give me an excuse to shoot with the 35/1.4 L which is becoming to be my favourite lens. I brought the 85/1.8 for some headshots too but have yet to process them.

Used the 30D. Shot with RAW + jpeg with Picture Styles setting at Portrait (3,0,-1,2). Processed mostly jpeg files.

It was a very windy day. I normally don't shoot with the subject facing the sun but we shot around 7pm so the lighting was kinda nice.

Here are some of my favourites:

As usual I welcome all comments.

Cheers,

José

Congrats, you've successfully capture the intimacy between the model and the photog (the viewers). Which is much harder to capture when you are using a long lens (like the 135L).

which is pretty much a standard lens. I shoot with the 135L too but I agree that there is better communication between me and the subject with the 35L. Also, the 580EX with the LSPJII really works in this distance without using a tripod and STE2.

José

Hi Lenny,

Unless I did it by accident, if the subject is already lighted by the late afternoon sun then that should be enough as I don't need to add more light by using a flash.

It will be different if the subject is behind the sun as I need to fill-in her face so I will use the flash. Also, when shooting at mid-day and the sun is directly above the subject, I will use flash to get rid of the 'panda eyes'.

If the light is coming from the side, I usually shoot the scene with the flash and without it. The latter is a creative call as sometimes I like part of the face shadowed.

I've shot with different setups but for the Olga shoot since I am pretty much 'up close and personal' with the 35G, I just mounted the 580EX + LSPJII (cloud version) on the 30D. In most cases outdoors I shoot with the diffuser pointed at the subject.

If you have any lighting questions, the people in the lighting forum are terrific and most are eager to help.

Hope this helps.

José
How do you deside where to use flash? I saw some of them with flash
and some not. Do you use special flash setups?
