Who's Afraid of Nikon's Latest Digital Camera?

That could be the title of Peter Inova's new book.

I got great pictures from the 5000 before it died. Belly up, lens extended, crying "Warning! Remove Lens Cap!" and would NOT retract after 36 hours of deep, battery-less sleep.

But, unlike some I've heard about, I bought mine at a small local camera shop so they replaced it with a smile and sent the DOA back to Mr. Nikon. Sometimes Internet purchase savings are not what they are cracked up to be.

I'm not afraid. But my fingers are sore. Firmware Friday. Well, heck, it used to be "Camera in November." Nikon needs to realize that the THING they are selling is a bullet proof operating system with an image chip and lens attached. They think of it the other way around.

Until the firmware update is here, don't dare open your 5000 with the lens cap on. Anybody found a friction cap that fits? The WC-E24 came with one and I know I've seen them in almost every size imaginable...

How much at that small local store?

I'm curious as to how it compares w/ taxes vs. the $975 one can get
the camera for on the internet.

Cheers,
Matthew

Reminds me of the new AMD 1800+ geforce 3 ti200 computer system I ordered at a "good Price" off the internet. Ask me if it would run anything in 3d accelleration, go on..... ask me.

The tough part about some of those Internet shops is that when you have an issue, they are nowhere to be found...

I did buy my CP5000 off of the web, but from ritzcamera.com. They are obviously a reputable retailer and have been great. I bought mine for the full $1099, but did it through my MSN Passport account and they are offering $100 back for a purchase over $500, so my total purchase will be $999 and I have a good dealer to work with.

Without "revealing" too much, let's say that you could cover the difference with a $20 bill and a modest lunch at McDonald's.

Scared me,after waiting weeks for cp-5000 to come out,and reading the reviews posted...waiting for pix (then seeing some,I bought the 707 instead.I have no experience using digital cameras or software so i figured id stay on the safe sidewith more of a reliable point and shoot camera.I prefered Nikons wide angle, smaller size, true colors and onboard controls but figured Sonys colors are usually good if you avoid red,are sharper(pre-photoshop) photos are consistently good, its considerably cheaper and the wide angle lens attachment makes 26mm available.I wanted microdrive not ms...but bargains can be found on MS and with a digital wallet or album handy its a small compromise to get what i want.Since more of my pix will turn out,i can take more of them qucker and have more of a choice to choose the best one from.No doubt some will make outstanding use of the cp-5000 eventually.I lost $100 because the 800.com bargain reached its quota, but thats the price i paid to be sure i was getting the right tool for me personally.Im pressed for time on all sides and by the time id have mastered the cp-5000 present opportunities would be lost and a better camera that is a simple point and shoot will have reached the market (IMHO)Sincerely Dan
