lost Adobe camera raw dialog box

I just installed the camera raw plug in my Mac OS 10.4.5 (in Adobe CS2) for the Nikon D200. I did have a D70 and everything was fine.

Now when I open a NEF file using a file from Nikon D200 in RAW (using the fine and NEF quality , 2 photos)I do not get the dialog box , instead I get a very small window that has only 2 settings. I then open this in Photoshop and the adjustments have been made automatically and it looks just like the JPEG .
So the 2 photos look exactly the same.

I cannot get the dialog box and so I really have lost control over the RAW photo. I do not know where the dialog box has gone.

I cannot turn the auto off as shown in the Adobe manual as I cannot access the dialog box.
Anyone else have this problem.?

Regardless, it appears that Nikon's RAW plug-in got installed on your computer. Try to find the file "Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi" and rename it to, say, "Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi.old" and then restart Photoshop. You should now be fine.

I think you need to install the CS2 and or Camera Raw upgrades...I couldn't do it because (I think) I'm still using SP1...if you install the upgrades you might get the window back. Hopefully someone else can offer us both advice.

Pradipta...

just tried what you suggested and couldn't open a NEF at all...got "not the right kind of document message". I used to open Nefs from the D70 out of Bridge under "open with" and I would choose Camera RAW but that is no longer an option and I'm not sure what caused it to disappear.

Plan on upgrading the computer soon so I've been doing everything out of Capture (with NEFs) but it's a bit confusing as to what happened to ACR.

I can't find ACR in the Adobe folder anywhere...and it was definitely there, PS CS2...I may have lost it somehow when the updates came out, I tried to update CS2 and ACR and Windows wouldn't allow it (with Service Pack 1)

since I'd been planning on getting a new machine I figured I'd just use Capture until I had to re-install everything anyway

Yes I installed the latest ACR 2 days ago.
I have deleted the Nikon software that came with the Nikon D200.
However I think that the Nikon software is still doing something.

Yep, the uninstall doesn't remove the Nikon plug-in in Windows... probably the same in Mac. In Windows, I 'd tell you to look for and remove and "Nikon*.8Bi files in your various Plugins directories...

Dear Suzanne!

Here is the answer for your question from Nikon Customer Help. (Sorry, I could not post the pictures)

How to select the NEF (raw) plug-in of choice after installing both Nikon and Adobe Photoshop software

During the installation of Nikon Capture, Nikon View or PictureProject software, the Nikon installer will check your system for an installed copy of Adobe Photoshop. If a compatible version is found then the Nikon software will install the Nikon NEF plug-in filter which will allow Photoshop to open Nikon NEF (Raw) files.

The Nikon NEF plug-in (shown left) allows the white balance and exposure compensation to be performed on the raw data contained in a NEF file before the image is opened in to Photoshop. If the Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in (optional for Photoshop 7 and included in Photoshop CS and Elements 3 or later) is installed after Nikon software, the Nikon NEF plugin will still be used to open NEF files in preference to the Adobe Plug-in.

If you prefer to use and own a copy of the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in (shown left), in preference to the Nikon plug-in, find and move the Nikon NEF plug-in (Nikon View or Capture) or Nikon NEF plug-in LE (Picture Project) from the Adobe 'file format' folder to a location outside of the Adobe Photoshop Plugin folder. Ensure that the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in is in the locations listed below.

Nikon NEF plugins are installed to the following locations on your computer:-
  • Windows C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop \Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats
  • Macintosh: Macintosh HD\applications \Adobe Photoshop\Plug-in\file format
Adobe Camera Raw plugins are installed to the following locations on your computer:-
  • Windows C: Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS# File Formats
  • Macintosh: Macintosh HD\Library\Application Support\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS#\File Formats
Nikon NEF (Raw) plug-in

Adobe Raw plug-in

After restarting Adobe Photoshop the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in (if installed) will be used to open Nikon NEF (Raw) format files. Please note that you may be required to update your copy of Photoshop if you wish to use the latest version of the Adobe Camera Raw Plug-in. To reverse the process and to re-install the Nikon NEF plug-in, copy the Nikon NEF plug-in back to the address listed above.

For information on the compatibility of the Nikon NEF plug-in with Photoshop Click Here

If you should encounter difficulty opening files after removal of the Nikon plug-ins or wish to find our more information regarding compatibility of the Adobe Plugin with Nikon cameras please visit the Adobe support site, Nikon do not support the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in.
