I have just bought a set of 2nd handed KODAK EKTANAR lens (sold as options for Kodak DC-4800, yes, I also bought the body on yesterday). They are all in 43mm thread which fit the QV-2900UX.

There are 4 lens:
  • Tele 2.0x
  • Wide Angel 0.65x
  • Macro 10
  • Macro 7
However, even they fit but it ruins all the pictures. Wide Angel lens make photos be yellow/dark. Tele is very noisy. Macro make the auto-focus failed. In general, I cannot use any of the above.

Anyone using a good wide-angel len with QV-2900UX?

Tiffen Megaplus (2X and .75X).

I've tried quite a number: 37mm Shakar 2x telconverter (actual 1.8x), 37mm Vitacon 2.5x teleconverter (actual 1.5x), 52mm Vitacon 2x teleconverter (actual 1.3x), 37mm Kenko 2x teleconverter (actual 1.3x), 52mm Hoya close-up+4 filter, macro lens, etc. They all work without problems.

For your macro lens, you're likely able to focus at fixed distances. For my +4 close-up filter, I can focus at 25cm away from the object.

Thanks KC,

You seem have many lens but most of them are not in 43mm (the default size for QV-2900). Then, you must be using adaptors. I shall try again the Macro lens, thank you for reminding me that I can focus an object far from it.

May I know whether you have posted any photo sample on the Net, so I would like to see the result?

yup, it's hard to find 43mm lens here. There's actually a very very good one which I just got.... the 52mm Olympus C-210 1.9x teleconverter. The quality is superb but you need full zoom for no vignetting.

I didn't have any website yet though.

I got a QV-2900UX for christmas 2001, and now I'm looking for a good wide-angle lens. From what you wrote, it seems I should stay away from EKTANAR lenses.

Have you found out what caused the problems you mentioned, and how to correct them? Or have you junked the EKTANAR lenses for other lenses?

On the Casio website I found that Casio is selling a 43mm 0.5x wide angle lens (I think I read somewhere that it's actually a Tiffen lens). Has anyone tried this lens?

Thanks in advance for any info.

KC,

I looked at your galleries -- you have some interesting pics. The wide-angle comparison pictures you posted on clubsnap are still loading (10 minutes now on a T1 connection -- must be the server) so I can't judge the distortion yet ...

Thanks much for the info. So I searched for the LU-8W lens on http://www.casio.com (U.S. site), but could not find it. Maybe it's so new it's only available in Japan? What I did find on the ff. site ...

http://www.casio.com/accessories/product.cfm?section=54&product=1615&display=

... is the WIDELE .5 Wide Angle Lens with 43mm Adapter, and the page says it works with the QV-2900. However, no mention of LU-8W could be found on this page.

You're saying that this WIDELE lens and the LU-8W are one and the same? And the site had a typo, and should read .7 Wide Angle Lens instead of .5? Could you please confirm this?

I'll also shoot Casio an email regarding this ... thanks again ...

Sounds like you're getting severe vignetting (center of picture is ok but the image sort of looks like a circle with dark area on the outside).

Since the 2900 already has an excellent 8x zoom (which is on the slow side as far as lens f-stop is concerned) it doesn't really work that well with auxillary lenses. It also has an excellent macro mode (down to 1 cm or so) so you really don't need to try to make it better. If you need more macro magnification, better hook it to a microscope! :-)

Here's the reply from Casio:
Question 1: is this WIDELE lens the same as the LU-8W wide-angle lens?
"The LU8 is not the same as the Widelens. The LU8 is for the QV2300, not the QV2800/2900."
Question 2: is this WIDELE lens really 0.5x? Or is this a typo and it really is a 0.7x wide-angle lens?
"The wide lens is .5x"

Bob,

I was looking for a wide-angle lens for my QV-2900UX, and was about to purchase an Ektanar wide-angle lens (they're less expensive -- around $34 compared to Tiffen's $79), when I read Tamp's post and his sorry experience with Ektanar lenses.

I agree that the QV-2900 already has an excellent 8X lens (40mm to 320mm) -- but I would like to shoot the inside of houses, and find 40mm is inadequate -- so I thought I'd get a wide-angle lens.

Could you please tell me if:

1) should I go ahead and get a wide-angle lens for my QV-2900 (will it work properly);

2) should I get a 0.5x wide-angle lens instead a 0.7x one (which one would be a better choice)?; and
3) should I indeed steer clear of Ektanar wide-angle lenses?

Thanks.

George

That's weird then. In the manual (on the CD), LU8W is listed as the wide-angle lens for the QV2400UX and QV2900UX and it's listed as 0.7x. In Japan, the Casio's brochure for the camera also listed LU8W.

you could check this out too (the lens are listed at the bottom):
http://world.casio.com/asia/qv/qv_2900ux/spec/

Maybe they have different accessories for the US market? I saw that the tele lens is listed as 2x at http://www.casio.com but it's 1.5x according to the manual and what I saw in Japan.

Sorry about the loading time of the pictures. They are hosted on a local server which has very bad access speed overseas.

you have to test out first though. I've got tried a Vitacon 0.4x wide-angle lens and the effect is quite awful. There's lots of distortion.

this is an example:
without the 0.4x lens:
