For those cosidering this lens/camera combo, I just took delivery from B&H and the lens works with the AF button out of the box. I had seen several threads regarding "re chipping" in order to add this capability.

Still testing it but so for it performs as I expected.

I was surpised by the size - not gignatic, but bigger than I was expecting. I think I was mentally expecting a small lens because of the small focal lengths.

One note to Sigma: You guys are making some nice glasss but you really need to improve your lens caps unless you want your customers putting Nikon caps on your lenses. But, hey, if branding means nothing to you then please disregard.

You are SO right about that lens cap! The rear cap isn't much better either.

If I could FIND a 77mm Nikon pinch cap in stock somewhere I'd probably replace the Sigma cap. Already replaced the rear cap.

As for the re-chipping, that was for earlier lenses. I'm sure that new ones from the factory are already D200 compatible as yours seems to be.

Yeah. I read a lot of negativity regarding this lens but I'm VERY impressed with mine. I find it to be sharp and contrasty, especially considering it's a 10mm lens.

You are absolutely right about the lens cap. I have had a couple of Sigma lenses that have been cheap in this area but the 10-20 absolutely takes the cake. My cap seemed like the diameter was about 1mm too small which results in a VERY loose cap. I bought a nice Nikon center pinch cap and I'm set.

You make a good point about branding. You'd think that Sigma would spend the extra few cents (if that) to make a cap that people would keep with the Sigma name on it for free advertising. shrug

Yes, I have the 18-50 and although I like the lens, it is a real pain to put the cap back on whilst the lens hood is attached. A center-pinch design would be so much easier.

Yep, I'm now using Nikon caps on both ends of my Sigma 10-20 because they are just soooo much better than the Sigma caps.

Tamron lens caps work great too, and they are much cheaper than Nikon and provide for even more brand confusion.

I too love my 10-20 :)
 
and if you notice, Sigma rear lens caps are not compatible with Nikon lenses...so you can't use one to cap a Nikon lens when you make a lens change...

You might want to recheck that. They are just as incompatible with Sigma lenses as Nikkors :-) (The Sigma rear caps only fit one way - they have a "dot" on them to align with the top of the lens before you twist it on).

But they are a real pain in the neck - compared with original nikon rear caps - for that reason.

Yes - this really is pretty bad. A few times I've gotten angry at the rear lens cap only to realize that it's the wrong one. You think they could make it universal!

I too have a Nikon cap for my 10-20. I'll be getting the Sigma 100-300 f4 and will be looking for a new lens cap for that as well (82mm, though).

That's why I replaced the rear cap on mine. When I change lenses, I need to be able to take the rear cap off the new lens and put it on the old lens. The incompatible Sigma cap was just killing this flow so I replaced it with a Nikon cap. Fortunately, it's an inexpensive thing to fix, but it seems silly that Sigma does this.

I have the 100-300 + Sigma 1.4 TC, so I was already aware of the cap swapping issue. The 10-20 just brings the point home.

Now, to be fair, Sigma provided very nice heavy duty nylon lens cases and Nikon didn't on my 18-70 or 50 1.8.

So - given the reaction so far, I am renaming this thread the "The Great Sigma Lens Cap Rebellion"

Perhaps after we have swapped out for Nikon or other brands of caps, we should mail the Sigma caps back to Sigma ;)

I have never had any problem putting one of my Sigma rear caps on to my Nikon 50mm/1.8. (Except for the fact that it has to be oriented just right, of course.) The 50mm/1.8 is my only Nikkor lens, though; do other Nikkors have a different design of their mount?
 
I actually prefer the Sigma rear lens caps because the dot makes alignment easy.
I have changed all my front caps for Nikon pinch caps.
