DMC-L1

I'm still wondering why there is now samples posted? at least some official shots from panasonic??? or they are too shy to show the photos? I'm 100% sure many of 'us' are waiting for reviews and samples before we can confidently spend something that much for a totally new camera, and a so-called high end camera.

Pannie have a habit of being slow to do official shots, and previous one for other models were ALL at ISO 100. Dont expect to see ISO 1600 L-1 shots anythime soon....

I suspect the Alpha is ist out with the review, I would imaging the L-1 is due next...I think it will get an ok but not HR review...

Now if it were $1000 instead of $2000...yeah! I start getting interested! lol

Seems like any photographs they release would turn into some sort of yelling match as they are disected and found to have proved that the 4/3 sensor was flawed from inception, they are noisy and the camera is too expensive to be worth thinking of buying.

We have to face the facts that this camera is outside the value parameters of most buyers and will only attract the nut cases who dare to be a little different. So there is not much point in commenting unless you are really a serious buyer and there are not many of us about.

By definition "nut cases" are mad and therefore don't have a grasp on reality and their crazy path to their own personal nirvana will blow all their remaining fortune on a camera that doesn't make sense.

So all that some early release pictures will do is to allow all the sane and sensible budget conscious types to loudly proclaim and prove that this camera in its entirity should be buried somewhere out to sea and the production line torn up and junked.

Not much point really. It is not going to change the minds of those that have already escaped the bonds of sanity.

Not that being insane actually means that the nutters who want to wait and decide after the camera is released will finally demonstrate their utter drivelling idiocy by actually parting with the entry price.

Perhaps they will return to sanity after making a careful assessment of the real live camera and decide that they will draw back from the brink.

We might thereafter sanely buy a cheaper body and some cheap kit lenses that can be readily replaced and upgraded almost every year. Oh to be rational again!

In the meantime this drivelling idiot does not wish to look at sample pictures even if they are taken by the most expert professional in the world rather than some office junior who has illicitly pointed the camera out of the nearest window. I am only concerned with what I personally can capture with this camera and whether it is good enough to flatter my capabilities. What others take is their business and I see no point in carrying on about whether sample images are good bad or indifferent.

I will just mutter to myself in my imbecilic sort of way and wait for the real thing. If ranting over "sample images" is sanity then I am glad I am a "nutter".

it would be like so many cameras that are out there now. The extra grand allowed a little better build quality. This camera will be better than the Sony A100.

To each his own. Most here say the L1 is a waste of money. I agree that it is not for everyone. For me it is maybe not even going to be a purchase problem as I really want the digital M from Leica. I do not think it is to far from being delivered in Sept so the L1 will not be required to just "tide" me over.

I like you get tired of all these useless posts when the camera is still so far from being deleivered. I prefer to live for today and use what I got but DO like to read about what is coming in the future. The L1 is not goiung to be a super ground breaking camera and at it cost will always tick people who can not afford. Seem the reason that most cut down new hardware is that they can't afford it.

You have proven over and over that the most important equipment is the human using it. You have taken the Tz1, which is not the top of the line Panny equipment, and show us all that YOU could take outstanding images with a pinhole camera.

No matter what equipment a photographer uses, I have found that some are "blind" compared to the "vision" of others and no matter how hard these "blind" photographers try they will never see as well as the one who have good "vision" with one eye open.

I thank you for allowing this "blind" person to see some of your work.

People might call me an equipment freak because of the sheer number of different cameras that I have owned. But I am waiting on the Leica Digital M which is a REAL "cult" camera. If a new Digltal Leica makes me feel good while "stumbling" my dim road of Photography, so be it!

I learned long ago not to let those who say I a wasting my money ruin MY journey!

Samsung has just proved that they can whisk some more gear on to market without much fanfare and tah-rah-diddle.

The most annoying thing about the L1 is that Panasonic seem to have gone for the most drawn-out length birthing process imaginable. Even now that it is "official" there is still a wait until September before a more general release.

No doubt after its release in Japan there will be a rash of reports and opinions and the inevitable "sample" images. The the rest of the world will have to wait another two months for D-day (or L-day? - pun intended).

So if this camera is going to be a dunce it is going to give the rest of the world a full two months to put up the shutters. This is a tremendous marketing challenge.

On the other hand if the early birds "love it" and it gets a real boost then there are going to be small, but very select, panting queues at the counters of those that deign to stock it.

So it is an enigma. I like quality gear and will pay a bit more for a piece of equiment that feels that it was cut from a sold piece of metal and everything goes click reasurringly and the twist controls move with that well-damped feel. However I am also concerned that, on paper at least, there is nothing too radical about it and am a little swayed by those that see it as just another camera, but overpriced.

On the other hand I do have an LC1 and it has convinced me that there is more to a camera than mere specifications.

Therefore I wait - I am interested enough not to dismiss the camera out of hand - I am fortunate enough to be able to afford one but unfortunate enough ot to "need" yet another camera. More money than brains is my designation. But maybe not - I use the gear I have and the relative use gives me an indication of utility value. The LC1 gets a good run and therefore I can only assume that the L1 would suit me as well.

Common sense says wait and see, but "gosh" its a long wait, good thing that there is nothing else "interesting" on the market - just think about that remark its quite a mouthful.

I am the worlds worst for being critical about things ;-)

but leaving that aside, if the L-1 rocks someones boat, helps them connect with their photography more, handles well, and people love it for what it is...(even if its not the worlds best camera)...then thats a good thing.

At the end of the day its only a camera...you are master of it, its not master of you........

Will I buy one? Probably not...but its interesting to see whats doing anyway. I like Leica stuff myself, and if it lives up to this in many ways..then well done on that one.

lets see what the reviewers say..and users.

I agree its been a bit too drawn out from pannie...they should have shipped them out a month ago.

It would be nice to see an expanded range from pannie to fill the lower end also..maybe they are working on it....I went elsewhere on the SLR front, mostly because pannie were taking too long over bringing one out..........

I think, the L! is almost perfect. The only item I miss is the transport lever.

Don't ever go away Barry. The last thing we need is to turn into a bunch of sycophants just "lurving" the L1. The forum needs your breath of fresh air and grumbling ... it is very useful even though we don't always agree with you.

I do agree that it is on the expensive side, that maybe the 4/3 format is not the best and, on paper it might not be anything revolutionary.

On the other hand I am still out in the left field over the fact that its quality of construction may overcome price reservations and it may very well produce results that belie its apparently unexciting specifications.

That is why I am just going to wait and see. It is on my "probably not" list at the moment, but not completely written off.

The missing ingredient in this discussion about a camera none of us has seen yet is THE LENS - an image stabilised Leica zoom.

If the camera is a complete dog, I might just buy the lens and bolt it onto an Oly E500 (image stabilisation will work in mode 2), which has got to be the best value-for-money DSLR on the market with a build quality that makes the Canon 350D and its cheap lens look very scrappy.

Or come September we might all be salivating over the next "new thing".

But seriously, I think a key issue here is one's assessment of the 4/3 open standard. Personally, I think it is in the interests of the photographic community as a whole to see it succeed ... and I guess that's where I part company with Barry

Well dont get me wrong now, I dont wish the death of 4/3 that wouldnt be nice to owners....nobody wants a repeat Oly pull out 80's style...! That burnt a few people then...some still have not got over it.

Its been raised before, leaving aside any technical issues, (4/3 is good enough if high iso performance isnt essential), that 4/3 "isnt open". Now I am no expert in this field, but it would appear that Olympus hold the reigns as such, and some say its a trademark too, I am not sure. If this is the case, it would explain why every other maker bar Oly/Pannie (who are in some business partnership together), has stuck to 3/2 aps-c or FF.

The only other issue worth bring up was the high lens cost for 4/3 owners. Sigma has a few now, thats good, but other major, and good makers are not keen. Tamron being one big player...and very reasonable in general quality/price wise. It only goes back the the format argument...ie 4/3 makes life harder......

For most lenses its simply a case of changing the mount to fit another brand, A mount, Canon, nikon, Petax etc...without question 3/2 is the place to be at...

I rather see it like MS pro and XD cards....more expensive, no need for them. Anyhow...lets wait for some solid info..I wont dismiss it outright just for being 4/3....

Barry, Tom,

It is like arguing about a car. I would have laughed you off a couple of years ago, as everyone knew, that having your bedroom next to the garage kept you awake all night, as the car was rusting so noisily, and ...

Well, I have my 2nd one, and can't be much happier. She might look silly or a bit weird, but she is a drivers car. The first one, I did not even had a look at the 'outside'. Just got inside

and behind the wheel. And was sold. Yes, there are many cars wiith a pricetag of $30,000,

better perfomance, 'better looking',offering more for the same amount of money. But I love to drive her, as she delivers what I ask. The seats are great, and being the luxury sister of the Alfa, she shines there too. No way, I will go the proven way of an GM (General Malaise) r Ford (fabricacion ordinaire, reparation difficile).

On the light side, Barry must be happy and glad that we differ, else we all might compete for his spouse. :)

I like the L1, not a a lens attached to a computer.

The point here is that its not an argument..its a discussion! lol

There is some interest among us just to see what the story is, we may not agree on everything...so lets just chill and agree not to agree on some things...its only a damn camera!
