Hello All!

I have tried shooting at night several times already (time exposures, etc..), Im not getting much luck with getting a decent image. Im getting LOTS of noise and some banding.

Is anyone having any better luck with their 1D??? Assuming its not me, is there something Canon can do to fix this?

Ive tried a multitude of combinations in taking these pics but Im getting crappy images.........HELP!

Im including a pic I took tonight to show what Im talking about. CLick the original to see what Im talking about, it almsot looks like a million dust specs......could it be or is it just the camera?

I can't say whether/not you have a problem with the camera, but looks to me like the image itself has some problems:

1. Overexposed. The sky should be black and in fact, it has much higher light intensity than black.
2. ISO looks high; you should have ISO set to 100.
3. The background is hazy so light is scattering off the haze.

How long is your exposure? Is your custom function camera setting to correct for exposures of > 1 sec?

Me too.

Yea, it is OE, I was playing with different settings just to see what kind of images Id get. Fact is, they all look like garbage IMO. FWIW tho, I didnt have the noise reduction turned on so that might be a factor. My town will be shooting off fireworks tonight so Ill be experimenting some more.

Actually it was set on 100.
3. The background is hazy so light is scattering off the haze.
If you're talking about the sky I think it was clouds more than haze.
How long is your exposure?
My shutter speed was long (8s) and aperature was too fast too (5.6).
Is your custom function camera setting to correct for exposures of > 1 sec?
Im not sure if I know what this means???

Thnx for you input!!!

Lots of experimentation.....
Used a new layer (blac) on top of your image set to difference-merged and saved

Ran saved image through neat image-don't remember the numbers, just played with it
Placed filtered (neat image) copy on top of merged/saved image

Inverted image to get a selection with magic wand tool of the burst and made a copy of burst that way
Took the background layer and applied small blurr

Placed inverted burst image copy on top of all layers and sharpened the burst only after inverting back to normal.

I will send the screen shot to your email as I can't figure out how to do it any other way.

overexposed... These are with the 1Dmk2N

first is 10sec f16
second is 5sec f6.3
third and forth are 13sec f16

all are at iso 100. unfortunately there was not really a good fireworks show this year at Canada Day, being in a small town sometimes is not an advantage...

noise is a problem with long exposures. Any of the cmos Canons will be better at this particular application ...

Hello all!

I just wanted to give a brief update since I started this thread and didnt want to cause any doubt in the minds of possible 1D buyers out there.

After turning on the noise reduction (on1) and using much slower aperature and/or faster shutter times, it made a huge difference in pics that I took last night.

I STILL have a way to go but the results with a just a few setting changes made a huge difference IMO so I thought Id share them here. Im so thinking about heading over to the NY skyline tonight to have another go at it.

The composition was on the crappy side, I just made the best out of where I was with my family. Also, I forgot my shutter release so I had to click away with my finger which may (or may not of) effected the final results. All images were shot at ISO100.

manual mode - first shot was f4.5 ISO400. The second was similar and I used the hat trick for it - open the shutter and capture a blast, cover up and repeat... That way I could stack multiple explosions. Of course I did composite a single shot of the amphitheater...
