E100VS - Light After Dark.

Hello Hugh,

The differences between "low light" and "low light 2" are so
deviously deceptive that I had to switch back and forth about a
dozen times to realize that you moved the tripod over and changed
the height of the camera.
Good eye.
Yes it was dark and yes this is a beautiful image. These make me
want to hop back on that plane and see the prints so that I don't
have to scroll the screen to see the large sizes.
Of course, you are welcome, but it would probably be easier to just print it. If you would like a higher resolution version to print, let me know.
I like tree tops and think of it as an abstract due to the way it
is cropped.
Those are my feelings too. It's one of the very few pictures I've taken that really improve with the absence of color.
Light echoes 2 scares me for some reason. Something about the
sharpness of the image and lack of color actually evokes a fear
response from me. Wierd.
There are "watch out for alligator" signs all over, and this is a jungle.
As usual I thank you for doing these and allowing me to spend
quality time looking at beautiful images.
And, I thank you as always for your comments and compliments. I love taking them. Having them enjoyed is icing on the cake :-).

With appreciation,

Very, very nice Hugh. I love dusk pics. They are very hard to
capture. But you seem to do it magnifecently. A great pic from the
other master. (Yourself and Larry)
Good morning Rick,

This one is a "dawn", but the process is the same, and, as a friend of my once told me, "If you can't tell the difference, the difference doesn't matter." :-).

Thanks for the compliment, and for putting me in such good company.

With appreciation,

Another very, very nice photograph, hugh. Something else impresses me, you got a composition to work with a square format. Something that is probably beyond me.

You're doing some good things with black and white as well. I particularly like these two:

My best regards,

I agree with Ed. The second b&w is absolutely gorgeous! So much to look at!

It probably won't come as a surprise to you that I was thinking about one of your "blue" pictures when I took this one.

Re. the square format, in several cases these square images have been much improved by cropping to a "normal" format. However, lately, I am finding that a crop actually removes elements I want to retain.

And, thanks again. TreeTops was an obvious choice for b/w. It really didn't work at all in color, but seemed to just light up when converted. LightEchos is not too bad in color, but the sense of mystery seems stronger when converted.

I have a roll of Ilford in being developed. I'm anxious to see is I got anything working directly in b/w.

With appreciation,

hugh

I think your cutting yourself short here. Plain? nah.
with respect,
Good evening Larry,

I appreciate the comment. I guess I should have said simple, as in containing few elements, rather than plain?

Thanks.

Good evening Beth,

Thank you so much for the fine compliment. As you know, I tend toward simple compositions. This one, however, just seemed to be almost alive with detail. I have a different composition with less detail that doesn't work near as well.

With appreciation,

hugh

So gorgeous, Hugh. The colors don't even look REAL. A frame and
spot on a wall would show this one beautifully.
Good evening Marilu,

They are indeed different. This one is certainly in my slide show. I'll know in a couple of weeks how it ages. At a minimum, it will go into my portfolio.

Good to hear from you.

Another low light picture. This one with film.

The large version, and two other new additions to the gallery are at:

The last three are the new ones.

And, if you run out of something to do, I've added a couple to the
b/w gallery at:

Thanks.

Good evening Gary,

As always, I appreciate the compliments. Sorry to hear you Wx is keeping you inside, but that should mean some still life, right?

With gratitude,

Hugh,

I am so amazed at the low-light pictures you've been taking. The light and color are appealing to me, and your composition is very fine, too.

I looked at your very good B&W gallery, also, and this one is incredible! Wow!

With respect,

adrienne

Good morning adrienne,

I'm glad you like them. I've been having a lot of fun exploring the capability of digital and re-learning the "lessons" of film.

The experiments in b/w from digital are as amazing to me as any other part of the experience. I used to shoot a lot of b/w because it was all I could afford. I shot as mich color as possible. Even now, I think color works best for most pictures, but, when b/w works, it produces some very fine results.

Thanks for the comments.

With appreciation.

hugh,

Very nice low-light work you've been doing lately, both with film and digital. Interestingly, I just got back some stuff I took with E100VS, which was actually quite decent (it has the reputation for saturated color that's more garish than Velvia), though they were daylight pictures that I may share in the new year. The film's hypersaturated qualities work very well with low light, and I truly enjoy the tonal qualities of many of your pictures.

Regarding the black and white image below: what everyone said. Great picture!

Best regards,

Robert

Good afternoon again Robert,

I'm looking forward to your E100VS posts. I've not actually tried it in daylight. I am very happy with the low light performance, and I appreciate your comments.

I took some Ilford b/w pictures last weekend. The scans are supposed to be available tomorrow. Stand by.

With gratification,

hugh
