Hi. I'm new to this forum so I'm not sure if this topic is suitable on this forum.

I bought a Canon S110 digital camera from Ritz Camera last Friday. I was very happy with the camera, but because of some problem, I returned the camera today for a replacement.

They gave me another package. Admittedly, I was in a hurry and maybe I did not check the package careful enough. Later, I found someone else's sale recipe and return recipt between the warranty card and the rebate form. Instantly, I was 99% sure that this "new" package was just returned by someone today. I could not believe what I saw.

Actually, I got a Olympus C-700 without a protective LCD cover from the same shop, several months ago. I wonder if it's a returned product also.

Now, should I try to get an exchange for my S110 again, or should I ask for a refund right away? If I should get an exchange, how can I check the replacement package to ensure it is a new one? I don't have much knowledge about this. I've tried my best to check the camera for any scratches, but obviously this does not work well. The box does not have any kind of seal, so I can't tell if the box is opened before.

If you have any advice, please let me know. Thanks.

Shops are entitled to resell returned goods in some circumstances - the original purchaser is usually charged a restocking fee or some such.

Thereafter the goods should be rewrapped and sealed and sold as such - the price may be slightly lower but not always and the shop is not obliged to sell lower either.

However, all the items on the product list are obliged to be there and in some cases the software MUST be in a sealed envelope and the peripherals, like batteries and lens caps and protective covers must also be in their original packaging. IE – the product must be new – customers are allowed a certain use but if the package it torn open and all the contents scattered and even some missing is a good indication that the item is “technically” a second hand unit having been used more than the overnight or weekend trial or released to more than one customer.

Stores differ in this regard and local laws are different but my own store which does not operate the returns policy will let me try a new camera – but I must return it “looking” new.

The same thing happened to me when I bought an Olympus C-2100 from AMDV online. The obx had a big green sticker on the side with some sort of handwritten code and, when I opened up the box, there were alkaline batteries instead of the Olympus nmh batteries. I considered sending the camera back but tested it out and everything worked just fine. I dediced to keep the camera, just in case they sent me one with something really wrong with it. I called and they sent me out a new charger and set of batteries, and the camera has not had a problem in the 5 months, 4,000 pictures I've taken with it. Go with what your gut tells you with regard to your camera. If you'd feel better exchanging it, do so. If you want to keep it, test it out. Did the return slip say why it was returned? Maybe the person returning it decided to go with another camera, meaning there were no defects in this one. Pat
