OS-X Image Capture hacking?

Hello,

I have been playing with the image capture program that comes with OS-X and find it works great with my new CP995.

I really like it's "build web page" automatic task where it downloads the images, creates thumbnail views, web sized pictures, and creates an HTML index all at once upon completion of downloading the images.

I've got a couple of questions though:

1) Has anyone figured out a way to have this "build web page task" run against a folder of images already downloaded to the computer? I can't seem to get it to run unless the camera is hooked up to the computer via USB.

2) if there isn't a good way to use Image capture to do this, are there any tools people enjoy using that would help me automate this process? I've got photoshop 6 and a new mac running OS-X, although the software doesn't have to be OS-X, as long as it will run in classic mode?

I want to make my life easier and get more pictures of the little one online so the grandparents can enjoy them.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I recommend spending the money for iView MediaPro. You can download it and see how it works for you before buying. It does a great job building web pages for image files. EXIF data can be viewed and you can include any EXIF data you like in the generated web pages too. The slide show feature is nice too.

The one thing this app doesn't do is present thumbnails of images in your file system. Instead, you create a catalog and drag images from your file system into the catalog, arranging them in any order you like. The only other thing I don't like about this app is that it can be a bit slow. All in all, it's an excellent application and easily worth the money.--Peter Epstein

Or you can create the web thumbnails inside Photoshop 6. Go to FILE> AUTOMATE> WEB GALLERY.

Nice interface too. I've used it for work just to view the many pieces of artwork that are in our archives, but now I use Iview Mediapro. A great program for cataloging pics! One very useful feature is to set it so when you double click on a thumbnail the image automatically opens in Photoshop. Sweeeeet!

Did somebody notice the following about Image Capture. Normally with Nikon 880 (fine mode) images are about 1M each. If you upload then to Mac with USB cable the size goes about half what is it in CF. This happens although you don't choose any options, just download. I didn't exactly buy Mac just to let it compromise any pixels that my camera captured. Does anybody confirm the case? If it is like this, I would like to communicate it to Apple to fix immediately. I cannot recommend Mac to anybody if there is no way to get all the pixels to HD.

I haven't noticed anything peculiar like that with my Olympus E-10, but now I definitely want to take a look into it. I'll post what I find out.

I just cross-referenced some shots I took with what it was after going through image capture and the image was around 150 kb short of what the manual says it should be.

I don't see anywhere on the camera itself telling me what the size of each picture is, but I do want to check into this further.

What will you find out when you compare the size on flash card (e.g plug it to PCMCIA slot) and download using USB cable and image capture? In my case (Nikon 880) the average iff is about 50%.

Petteri,

Making a comparison based on the file sizes reported in OS X may be error-prone. What does the downlaoded image look like ?

If the binary image was improperly truncated, you shouldn't be able to view it at all. The only way a smaller-sized yet viewable pic could be generated would be via downsampling, & Image Capture doesn't do that.

If this were a real rpoblem, it would already have been reported to the Mac
newsgroups & widely broadcast. You're either misinterpreting some info,
or your Nikon driver is doing something really wrong. It's definitely not the
Mac's fault.

The only thing I can possibly think of is related to Preview Icons. One image may include a preview, while another might not. To resolve any potential differences you must visually compare the images. Viewing the pic in a photo app should resolve this issue immediately.
