Sony DSC-S500

Another "just like everything else out there" camera.
At $179.95 this is the least expensive current Sony camera, yes?
(The only less expensive cameras I find at SonyStyle.com
are the old L1 and S40 -- refurbished. Let's talk about
current cameras, not refurbs.)

A 2.4" LCD is a nice feature in an inexpensive camera, yes?

32mm wide angle is nice to have in an inexpensive camera, yes?
Others tend to start somewhere in the 35-40mm range.

Find me a $179.95 Canon camera with 32mm wide and/or a 2.4" LCD.
No dice, dude.

Find me a $179.95 Casio with 2.4" LCD. Well maybe the old Z57
can stil be found, but I'm talking about current cameras not refurbs.

Comparable cameras at this price with a 2.4" LCD (but not 32mm)
are the Fuji A600 & Kodak C643, now $179.95 & $174.95 at B&H.

But (you protest) you don't want to buy Memory Sticks.
Well, it's not so painful: you can get a 256MB Pro Duo
from e.g. Beach right now for $22.91 with free shipping.

In summary:
The DSC-S500 is an inexpensive camera with
32mm at the wide end and a 2.4" 110-Kpixel LCD.

96mm at telephoto is too short.

Most of the people that I FUJIFILMed did not know that there was someone.

Its funny how you accuse me of something I never said. Nice of you to put words into my mouth. Look any way you look at it, its still only a 3x optical zoom camera. Big whoop about everything else. You would think they might introduce something like a 10x optical zoom with 6mp and slightly bigger than their "W" series. Instead they introduce a lower priced version of everything that's already out there. U tell me the market isn't saturated with 3x optical zoom minicams with huge LCD's? Go ahead tell me it ain't so. BTW I happen to have a 512mb of memory stick with my V1, so ask before you accuse.

Canon seems to be behind the "trends" but that doesn't seem to affect their sales. They were among the last to switch from CF-to-SD, the last of hte majors to offer 2.5" LCDs, to switch from 4AA-to-2AA designs, offer subcompact IS, etc.

The Canon A-series has been very successful in the $200 price range. Credit goes to Sony for trying to offer an alternative. No manufacturer so far has been able to sustain an alternative to the Canon A-series.
