Hi,

I will be co-hosting a photography workshop next month in Germany, and my part in that workshop will be Natural Light Portraiture.

The participants will also get the chance to shoot some portraits and I will be there to explain, and support.
I have been practicing a bit with one of the models that will also be there.
So we went out for about an hour and tried some simple setups and poses,

Only 1 reflector and some shade, because the purpose is to shoot nice portraits with minimal equipment, and we came up with these:

What do you think?

Oh, and if you want to know, the lens used was the 85mm f1.8, you gotta love that lens.

Some great shots there! And yes, a true beauty!

What I would like to see is someone taking photos of you taking photos...does that make sense? I would have liked to see a layout of the room/positioning of the reflectors/etc...

Great shots nonetheless!

I understand, but that's what I will explain at the workshop, so I didnt see the need here to do it.

The setup is pretty simple, just look for a nice background in the shade, place the model, place the reflector so that it will shine some light in the face.

You can see the position of the reflector in pic 1 and 3 if you look at the catchlights in her eyes.

The reflector was just placed on the ground leaning against my camera bag, this doesnt work when it's windy...

  1. 2 is too distracting but 1 and 3 are perfect. Good luck at the event.

Beautiful model, lovely portraits, love the natural soft lighting of the reflector, the gold light on the brown skin works very well most flattering to the model. However I did not like No 2 the leaves of the plant accross her face does not work for me also the colours are way off, there is blue cast making the skin a sort of purple, the white of the eye blue and the plant a queer green.

Hi,

I think all 3 images are great. What a fantastic tecnique and a great looking model! Fantastic colours and sharpness. Did you do any PS work??

I really like shot #2. I can also see that there is a blue cast in the whites. On the other hand, her skin is so beautifull in that shot. Very warm and soft, and not so yellow as in the other shots.

What I would like is a crop of shot #2 just right of the left eye, or maybe just a suggestion of the right. Crop out the rest of the plant and the ear ring, it is distracting and your eye seams to go wandering in that right corner with the ear ring.

But #2 still has a fantastic exotic look and the plan suggest rain forest - very exotic and a lovely shot.

A online guide to your portrait tecnique would be greatly appreciated ;-)

Good luck with your workshop.

i have a couple models lined up to give them free shoots with natural light - so i can grow as a photographer and my portfolio can too, and they can get some free pics.

one headshots and others full body. since i dont have a studio i have to use natural light. i figured on picking up one reflector and also maybe utilizing my 430ex. glad to see the quality i can achieve if i hone my skills.

keep up the good work and post more if you feel like it.

Hello Peter,

excellent shots! As for the 85/1.8, this very lens is already on my 'to buy' list since last week, as I tried it at a store.
