HELP!!! Both arriving tomorrow! Assuming the quality is high on both, (can the difference be seen on 8x10?) which one to keep as a "walk about" lens? I mostly do travel and family pics. Anybody had a chance to compare them?
Tamron is faster, smaller/lighter, longer (Toyota?).
Canon is an L, better build quality (BMW?)>
Price difference is not that significant.
Thank you for your thoughts.

Well, most people here can only tell you their personal experience, but since you have BOTH coming in tomorrow, then you'll be a step ahead of most of us. Do some comparisons, and then post your findings here, and let us guess which images are from which lens...

Your eyes will see the "pop" and sizzle of one of the lens.
Tamron will be back in the mailbox, return to sender.
Enjoy!!

......please do let us know :).

i was considering the same two lenses and i also already owned the tamron 17-35.

i ended up buying the 17-40 and selling my tamron, which was a very good lens.

the color and contrast of L lenses are simply better than what the tamron produces and i wanted a short zoom with IQ comparable to my mid and long zooms, both of which are Ls.

that's my reasoning but if the IQ of the 17-50 is as good as the 17-35 i could see you picking it over the 17-40 because of the f2.8 and extra length.

please let us know.

hmm... we'll see. not in my case.

17-50 overall arguably performed slightly better for me and it has 2.8 and better range.

if you have good copies, I don't think they are so different as you make it sound.
the L went back for me.

I suffered the same dilemma for the past week. My solution:

I ordered a 17-55IS :)

Just placed order an hour ago.
haha, i thought about that, but then thought about a giant LCD and a longer vacation and the 17-55 lost out. might eventually switch to it some day though.

The 17-40 will win the focus race. My guess is if you love the 2.8 then the Tamron will be in the race. If not, then you will pick the canon.

I don't have either, but have used both for a short time.

I sold the Canon 17-40 f4 L:

Color/contrast better on Canon
Sharpness -> Tied
Focus speed -> Canon
Speed -> Tamron
Build Quality -> Canon
Focal range -> Tamron

So it all depends on what is important to you -> speed/focal range or color/contrast/build? For me, I wanted the extra speed - in the canon line up - that would leave me to the 16-35 f2.8 L and that lens costs $1200! Way out of my budget. This isn't to say that the Tamron is better - clearly the 17-40 L is in a different league and for any one who claims that Tamron is just as good is kidding themselves - BUT for my** needs the Tamron wins - and I get to save some money - how often does that happen?

I would rather have the Tamron. I will take a faster lens any day! Also, the Tamron will save you some $$. At 8x10" print size you won't see a bit of difference between those two lenses!
