Bye by Canon...sick of dust.

...where crying "troll" is an apparent favorite pasttime. But not here, even if he is being deliberately inflammatory. So much easier to ignore than name call.

Wow, you've had lots of Canon bodies. You must be a pretty good photographer. I'd love to see some of your pictures. Can you post them please, now that you have a dpreview account?

Thanks.

Well it's a stupid post! You are going to give up probably the BEST camera manufacturer out there because you get some dust on the sensor?

Come on, please! Get serious!
Mrl Jones,

Only registered because until today was only a viewer of the forum.

With paranoid geeks popping up their heads worrying about Nikons i
probably shouldn't have bothered.

You'll have to ignore the gallery's collection of bad compositions, improper exposures, and amateurish post processing. ;)

Nice pictures. How come you never registered here before?

Lawrence,

maybe you should point your D60 and 20D at a the closest magnolia
wall, set your aperature to F22, adjust your levels and be prepared
for a lotta dirt.
I checked for dust when I cleaned my 5D, and no Problems with the D60 or 20D, I had a few stubborn dust spots but I kept at it with the rocket blower and they went away, I have ordered the visible dust brush kit, decause its dry and easy to use, but I would'nt sell my 5D untill canon makes something even better,
Whether you notice it or not depends upon what you are shooting.
Landscapes you definately do
if you are shooting landscapes you should be using L glass, I used to have the 28-135 IS and although its a good lens, its not L quality. If you are stopping down vignetting should'nt be a problem

I have shot lots of landscapes with no dust problems

it was at the cliffs of moher I got the dust, changing lenses in the wind, normally i keep the camera pointed towards the ground while I change, that day i forgot and I got dust, Fuji and nikon are just as prone to dust

Honestly, I would stick in there and clean the sensors more often

Regards, Lawrence

I used the Oly E-1 until couple of month ago and I'm much happier with the 5D.
Anyway has anybody any thoughts on which would be the better
changeover option, which manufacturers anti dust mechanism is
better and whos image stabilizaton is better???
How could anyone possibly know when the Sony isn't even out yet? Oly's anti dust system works fine. Slight lag on the order of 1.5 sec on startup for dust shaker to work, but personally I didn't find it to be an issue.
The lenses i currently have are 100-400L, 17-40L, 100Macro and a
28-105 which is unusable due to vignetting on the 5D (why was this
not such a problem on the film bodies?)
No IS lens in Oly lineup. If that's important to you, Sony is the only option. Also no HSM with Oly. Be ready for slow noisy focus motor.

Panny L1 with the Leica 14-50 would be an option, but at $2K USD, it's quite a bit to pay for unproven new camera.

Personally, the big limitation that I could never get use to is the small 4/3 viewfinder. I thought it was fine until I got a D2H, which made me realize how much I missed nice big viewfinders. Be sure to take a peak thorough the viewfinder to make sure you can live with the tiny view. I couldn't after trying the 5D.
Any advice would be appreciated. Anyone else left the Canon stable?
Nope, just sold Oly E-1 to get 5D. As I said, personally much happier.
Any technology on the horizon I should wait for?
Potentially the rumored E-1 replacement. Latest speculation is 10 mp, no IS, maybe E-330 like live view. Maybe even EVF.

Good luck.

Canon must address this issue! They don't listen to their customers!
It's appalling!

It takes seconds - not even minutes - to clone dust bunnies off the image - when you need to do it at all. It takes tens of minutes to clean sensor and focusing screen. If you are amateur - and it looks you are - it can not be burden for you. Cleaning film for scanning may be laborous - but sensor dust just does not deserve to be mentioned.

I don't have dust problems on my 5D sensor, but I'm SICK TO DEATH of L-glass lenses that get dirty on the outside element every time a little smudge or fingerprint comes along. I shouldn't have to clean L-glass lenses, for the price I expect them to STAY CLEAN ALWAYS!! I'm jumping ship from Canon as soon as I figure out which other manufacturer's lenses don't get dirty...
