Looks like Adobe is buying up the competition.

"Adobe buys RawShooter engine

Adobe buys RawShooter engineIn a brief statement Adobe has announced that it has purchased the 'technology assets' of Pixmantec, the Danish company behind the RawShooter raw workflow and conversion application. Adobe states that this acquisition "strengthens Adobe's leadership position in raw processing" and that that Pixmantec's raw processing technology will be integrated into Lightroom and other Adobe products. RawShooter Premium will be discontinued although the Essential edition will continue to be available and support for existing RawShooter customers will be available from Adobe. (13:40 GMT)"

I think I'm happy about this. I use CS2, but I can imagine this would be part of a major upgrade (i.e. CS3). I love the color rendition in RSE but I prefer the convenience of Bridge/ACR.

I hope Adobe does the "right thing" w.r.t. existing RSP customers.

Agreed with Enrico. Competition is good, plus PSE it was free &
RSP very inexpensive.
Didn't the announcement say that they'd be continuing RSE? Maybe I
got confused and it was just support for it. I was actually hoping
that they might finally produce a Mac version of RSE now.

RSE will be kept going until the public beta of Lightroom finishes, RSP is being killed off.

I think this is going to suck for non photo Shop users. If Adobe owns the "technology assets" of Pixmantec they will control new development and releases - like any "update" for new Raw files from the new D Model or whateveritwillbenamed will then be for Adobe user only. Maybe I'm just pessimistic, but stuff like this happens all the time with many other software companies. I assume Adobe will take Pixmantec over like Corel did with Jasc software. Oh well - there is always Bibble Labs as an option before the get sacked by a big fish.

Sorry I know it's more personal than anything else, but it now supports my decision to NOT buy RSP....... Adobe is one 500 lb gorilla that does annoy me. Just had to vent and my condolences to owners of RSP.

Actually, I like Adobe's product. What I don't like is their pricing structure. For example, PSE is a US$100 product. The next step up, CS2 is a US$600 product. There is no upgrade path. It would be nice to be able to start with PSE, learn the ropes, then be able to upgrade to CSx for an upgrade price.

Maybe us adobephobic people are more of a vocal group. Not a lot of happy chatter or "good jobs" on this thread :)

Not to mention that there is a lot of equivalent software at reasonable prices (and not to mention that their inflationary prices also inflate the cost of "partner" software) if people wouldn't be so entrenched in brand loyalty (present company excepted) that might enjoy a bit more success in a more open enviroment. Same with Canon. Most of it I see as peer pressure. Which is why I guess I mention it when I can. Pentax is almost the essence of "bucking the trend". Of course everyone has their own right to pick and choose..........

At the risk of being called names, this is no big deal to me.

Rawshooter Essentials or Professional was never supported on the OS I prefer so I could never use it and thus never cared about it. The results I'd seen from it were nothing that couldn't be done just as well in PSE + Camera Raw or Silkypix or any of several other RAW conversion applications.

Competition is good, but there are plenty of competitors in this space. How many times do you go to different RAW processing software in the course of a day's work? I find it more useful to learn and exploit all that one can do ...

If you keep your eyes & ears open, occasionally Adobe provides an upgrade path to the full PS. At least this was my experience as a registered PSE2 users. After several lost opportunities, I finally took the plunge and upgraded. I paid about 1/2 the full retail price, straight from Adobe.

As for the loss of RSP & possibly (probably?) RSE, it's a real shame. I hope Adobe keeps RSE as a free alternative even if the only updates are to add new RAW file compatibility. It's a great, no-risk 'starter' program for learning RAW conversion, at least it was for me.

As an RSP owner, I feel a bit cheated. However, I prefer ACR3.3 in most regards. Except for the reduction in competition, I'm ok with this.

I guess it is because most Pentax Folks like small, nifty, and functional things, reasonably priced. Anything Adobe makes is overpriced bloatware!

Buying Adobe CS feels like buying Microsoft Office, just because someone needs a Text Editor.

I just installed RSE and RSP on Vista Beta2 for testing purposes - runs fine, too bad it probably won't support the next Pentax DSLR.

I tried and liked Rawshooter....until I used Silkypix, and now that is all I use. If you can't do it there, you probably can't do it.

As someone who bought RSP, I feel totally ripped off.

There will be no support for the K10D and I'll be forced to buy a different RAW processing package.

I always thought there was something unsavoury about Pixmantec's decision to sell their colour profiles separately at a high price. This latest action just confirms that feeling.

I'm really ruing my decision to buy RSP rather than C1 LE.

I agreee with you Godfrey.

I tried to use RSE once, found it to be utter rubbish, clunky to use, and not intergrated, for my purposes using ACR+Bridge and PS has a far more usefull, for both organisation and post processing.

So, RSE "will be integrated into Lightroom and other Adobe products's".

... i.e. just another module in some over-priced piece of bloatware.

What a great shame. Let's hope they continue to provide new camera support for the Premium version.
