Personally I'm sticking with ImageStation, I figure if Sony goes
belly up then it is the end of the modern era as we know it and it's
back to the stone age for all of us...haha =). I wonder how Phil
would feel if ppl started using the S&G forum to archive their
favorite pictures... whooah!! ;^)

On a side note, is there any rumours on what Sony is working
on next? Will they continue the S-series and deliver larger ccds
and bigger glass or are they working the low end with
entry level ultra-portables ( you know the 1.6M variety )
I can't get a 'feel' of what Sony will do next....however
I'm pretty confident we won't see any DSLR any time soon and
the F707 will remain their flagship cam for at least another year...
Are any of you using PhotoPoint.com as your online photo service?

Have you received an e-mail about their service being unavailable?

There are essentially no rumors floating around as of yet. But I would be highly surprised if they discontinued their S-series of cameras, their consumer-level cameras. It has been one of their largest rain-makers. Larger than the F-series in terms of money, I'm sure, whereas the F-series is well-named: 'F' for Fanatic. Each has a great support base, but of somewhat different temperments. :)

I'm sure we'll see some continuation of the P-series, the point-n-shoot variety. This one does surprisingly well for them, too. They need to come in at an even lower price point in order to compete better with Oly, I would imagine. But that end isn't going away either as it's the best way to grow your audience for the higher-end purchases down the road.

Nahhhh... I would not expect a D-SLR around the corner. Though they are almost certain to develop things that mimic D-SLR type cameras in several ways. And I'll bet that we'll see a true end to a lot of the things that have plagued the latest F-series and S-series cameras in common. I have a feeling in my bones....

I can't wait.

I would concur...I believe Sony definately needs an in-between camera with a lower price point. Something like the Canon S40 or Oly's C40. Both of these cameras are considerably smaller than the S75/S85 series, but larger than the P5. They don't take adapter lenses, or external flashes. OTOH, they combine small size/weight with manual features, and with 4MP image size.

I believe Sony could come out with a camera to fill this niche, and all they'd need is some good feature that would entice customers away from the Canon or the Olympus.

I don't imagine Sony will attempt a digital SLR camera, but God only knows.

Side note...has anyone ever seen the new Minolta adds? They espouse a theme that seems to be harbored by many in the camera world; namely, what's a non-camera manufacturer doing making digital cameras? My response to that is, "isn't a digital camera both about software/electronics design and about photographic quality? Does anyone gripe about Canon making inkjet printers? I think Sony's foray into the digital camera world has proven to be a spectacular success. The fact that they partnered with one of the world's premier lens manufacturers seems to have given them instant credibility. I simply see Sony at the forefront of the trend of convergence that's been percolating in the electronics industry for sometime. They already make some of the best looking laptops around. I'm surprised they haven't tried their hand at cell phones. And look what they've done to the electronic game industry.

As long as Sony keeps making great cameras with the kinds of features most people love, they'll continue to sell tons of cameras and stay on or near the top of the heap.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, I know. Pretty silly logic, if you ask me.

Might as well say: What's mfr known for making cameras doing making a digital device? Leave that to the pros who know how. :)
Does anyone gripe about Canon making inkjet printers?
Not the users of the S800...

They ARE at the top of the heap in terms of market share. And this year's offerings has only put them higher up in the race, I would imagine. If I were a betting man, I'd bet cold cash that they can't make enough of the S-series and F-series.-- Ulysses

I figured they were the top of the heap, but being of a conservative bent, I thought I'd hedge my statement just in case someone called me to task on that one.

Like who???

The nearest competitor in terms of the marketshare is probably Oly, right?

Think of who the players are:

Sony
Oly
Canon
Nikon
Casio
Minolta
Sears...

... oh wait a minute... that last one doesn't make cameras... :)-- Ulysses

Sony just partnered with Ericksen (sp?) for cell phones, too.
