That New York Feeling - 7 photos

Hi Sander

Excellent shot.

William Van Allen's Chrysler Bulding is IMHO the most iconic building built. I've tried on many occasions to take "THE" shot. I never did - you just have. Maybe I'm just not that good!

Where were you standing to get that brilliant shot and what lens were you using.?

Hi JMS,

I agree with you teh Chrysler building is a beautiful building, it was right down the street from my hotel, but I took this shot from right across the street of the southwest corner of Grand Central station on 42nd, with the huge eagle on the other side of the road. I took it with the 18-70DX and this is a 6MP crop of the original 10mp file. Thanks for the comment :)

Hi Dennis,

I'm assuming you mean Long Island, I flew over LI on my way over, the surf looks good, I guess it's a nice plave to get away from the city while still being close to it. Thanks for stopping by :)

Hi Emax,

thanks for your comment, I took a risk and took my Gitzo 1325 up the 86th floor of the ESB in 2004, and I got away with it for about 40 shots, than I was spotted and was asked to leave... So this year I didn't take anything with my and just put my camera balaning on the edge, keeping it in place by pushing on the camera and using the 5 seconds delay to take the pic :) I saw some people with a table top tripod though, those were allowed apparently because nobody can trip over them, and there's lots of corners and places to put the small table tripod on ESB. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

consider it a date next time I'm there :) thanks for having a look, as you know I'm a huge fan of your work, and in fact you post about Top of the Rock last fall was the thing that inspired me.

Hi Johnny,

that Brooklyn Bridge shot was taken last week, and there's lots of people taking photos on the bridge, only thing you have to watch out for is the speeding bikers rushing by...
Thanks for having a look :)

Thanks very much Zane, I appreciate the comment about the light,
I'm always looking for it but don't find it all the time :)

Here's on shot I took in the last light of the afternoon, dark
skies brewing behind the Chrysler building:
Sweet shot Sander! Great sense of light; a sign of someone who really knows what they are doing!

Cheers,

Thanks, Sander.

I was able to use a full-size tripod from the ESB a few times before and after 9/11, but recently it seems they've clamped down. I will take a minipod next time, but I don't think it will support the 70-200 VR very well. Maybe I'll take a beanbag as well.

I'd also like to use a tripod in Grand Central Terminal. Normally a permit is required for this.

I've shot lots of film in NYC, but I'm itching to try the D200.

Keep up the good photography!

Thanks Kevin, moody was what I was going for, first I had all B&W but I tried the toned versions and they looked good enough to me (better than the B&W ones) so I went with those.

yes things have certainly become more difficult for us, I used the G1325 for the 70-200 VR also, I took some sweet nightime shots of the city, but alas... I think the beanbag is a great idea, just make sure it doesn't fall down: yikes!

Especially like the one on the Bridge. Could you share how or where one can get that view? I'm doing my second ever trip to NY next month, and I do like that view you had. Thanks.

You're right. I wasn't allowed the tripod so I had to balance my D70 on a table top tripod with my PDA & lens cap to hold the lens up and steady. Shot with a timer release. Stitched in PS.

Have printed the first two at 2 feet by 7 feet and the last one at 2 feet by 11 feet and put it up on my office wall! :)

The small size images here just don't do justice to it.
