I'd like to see some old Harvards and Spitfires, or a couple of
Pitts Specials and Jennies. Gliders or jets. In the air or not. Your
model plane masterpieces.

Martin,

great pics. Some fo the full size seem to be having taken while flying. Am I correct ? Could you tell me the lens you used for these superb shots ?

Thanks

PS I am an ex competition sailplane pilot here in central Italy. How many times I would have loved to have a pro photograper with me !!! Unforgettable sights of clouds, other flying things, mountains etc etc (just in case you wondered I was usually too busy flying to shoot decent photos 8-> )

If two people agree on everything one of them is redundant.

You must be a BRAVE man !!! I would have fainted to have such a bullet darting at me (unless you are cheating with a 5000mm lens 8-> )

Hi rjalex

Nope! They were all taken while the feet were firmly on the ground.
The full size were at our local airshow and the models at an open day event.

I used the Bigma for all of them.
It's quite a usefull lens when handled correctly.
You have to learn to pan proerly though and depend heavily on good light levels.

I've done some air to air stuff, but taking decent pictures when you're the pilot doesn't work too well.

I've also taken the door off my C182 and gotten someone else to do the piloting - that was fun (got some awesome shots of an Extra300 with its wingtip almost inside my door.)

The flight was so smooth that, while heading to the photo area, the pilot of the Extra and myself were playing "rock/scissors" he was that close!!!

Regards
Martin

Thanks Martin. As I have been grounded for high blood pressure, you made my heart break with the desire to be up there again. If you have ever flown in sailplanes you would surely know that flying very close to others is very common especially in those days when everyone seems to cramp right under that lone cumulus in a meager day 8-) I have flown in gags (dunno if that is the right word) of 25-30 sailplanes circling in not more than 100 vertical meters (approx) ... assured to have no time doing a photo 8-)

Bob

PS Sorry for the OT but a grounded pilot is a wounded beast 8-(

Haven't loaded older photos on Pbase yet...so these are not necessarily my best but ones I have on Pbase – all taken last month (May) – a few misc photos. No Harvards or Spitfires…behind the P-51 the Spitfire is probably my all time favorite aircraft.

good work and very sharp. Your exif shows high shutter speeds even at 400mm. What lens did you use for this array of pics?
Cheers Suby

Thanks,

I used the 400/5.6 for most shots - I switched to the 70-200/4L with 1.4XTC for some of the formation shots.

For jets I like to keep the shutter speed above 500 and for props I perfer to keep the shutter speed 250 or lower. The B-25 at 1/800s was a bit of a mistake - I was shooting jets when the B-25 flew by and didn't lower the shuter speed.

Below is a B-25 shot at a better shutter speed.

Bob

send me an email to grahamw at arach dot net dot au if you want to talk about gliding in australia..

cheers..

I was taking shots at our car club's hillclimb in October last year when this guy flew in unannounced and uninvited and put on a great show for the spectators. I hadn't taken any more than two plane shots ever, so I was pleased with these taken with the kit 70-300 lens. I guess the clear sky helped the auto focus.

Here are some old photos. Can't take credit for either but was Armanent Flight Test Engineer on both projects. The photo of the F-86 Sabre as a tow plane for rocket testing is a digital scan of a photo taken 1955-56. The second photo is of the AVRO Canada Arrow c1958.

I have a couple more old photos of an AVRO jet fighter and an AVRO jet passenger transport of same vintage if anyone interested.
