Nikon 30mm 1.4 Coming Soon?

Although J&R clearly calls this a

NIKON 30mm F1.4 EX DC Lens

the EX DC terminology is SIGMA's! And the specs nbelow talk of an HSM motor (Sigma).

Maybe it's just a typo and I can keep my 28mm 1.4 a while longer ;-)

HSM indicated Sigma. In any case, it is a DX lens. The 28mm F1.4 is full frame and will work in film as well as digitial and hence its high value.

That is what I will be using it on, film.

Best from Antioch.

...it's true.

Nikon really needs to fill this gap.

Clearly this is a mislabeled Sigma offering, but Nikon needs to step up here and offer their own versions.

I believe something along these lines is coming from Nikon -- why else would they discontinue the 28mm 1.4?

'Trust the 'kon!'

Stuff I own in my profile.

That's the only other reason that I can see for dropping the 28mm f/1.4. I admit that the 28 was lower on my list of future must-haves, but it was definitely on the list.

Now I'll have to dig up a used one or settle for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (a decent lens for the money).

From what I can see, Nikon isn't interested in filling these gaps. They are mainly focused on producing new cheap zooms and gimmick laden compromise primes rather than the wide fast apeture lenses that alot of people need. I love my Nikon DSLR's and the midrange primes I mainly use. I love my few zooms and macro's but have other needs that Nikon isn't going to meet. That's the reason I've made up my mind that I need to fully invest in atleast two systems. One is a done deal. Nikon DX. The other is FF. I don't mean digital either.

If you look at the Sigma official website, you will see that the write-up at J&R is taken directly from Sigma's 30 1.4 page...

there is probably not a market large enough to make any money out of making such a lens, so they dont. I am sure there are many they could make some money on but it seems midrange moderate price zooms are the moneymakers. I am sure a lot of people would love a 16mm f1.4, but very few would actually cough up the dough for it. The 28 f1.4 was very desirable but not affordable to many (in other words not many people actually bought one, as much as they wanted it) I can think of a lot of missing lenses I would love, but I dont know just how popular they would be, like a 50-150 2.8 afs vr, a simple dx 16mm f2.8, a 24-85 2.8 dx afs vr

Because the 28/1.4 is not good enough on DSLR?

Nikon NPS stroongly recommend NOT to use the 28/1.4 because results are dissappointing. I tried their demo copy ... and yes, it was disappointing.

(Compared to Nikkor 28/2, 35/1.4 and Sigma 30/1.4)

this lens does have sigmas HSM engine.
Also it is a much newer design than the 50/1.4
also, I payed 409 euro for the 50...
the 30 is at 449 pretty much in the same ballpark :-S

Now, if Nikon manages to make their own, and price it similarly to the 50/1.4, then that might be the first lens I'd buy new and on the day it is released...

SteveDoubleU,

35mm is quite different from 28 (or 30); also the Sigma 30/1.4 easily outperforms the 35/2 Nikkor on DX bodies (yes, I have both lenses).

I gave up after 3 copies of the sigma all had backfocus issues (one was almost acceptable, but the other two were terrible). I think the Sigma 30 is a very or miss proposition...

Probably because it required an extremely labor intensive "traditional" aspheric element and it wasn't selling in any quantity. Going be serial numbers, substantially fewer than 10,000 were sold.

I miss the days when I used to be nostalgic.
