I'm interested in picking up a USB stick reader. Have the non-sony ones been reliable - the Sony reader seems a little expensive at about C$120 (say US$80).

I picked up the very simple and small translucent blue Zio which worked flawlessly. It was about $50 and has a $10 rebate.

For you info Sony has released a 24x10x40 CDRW Drive with a memory stick slot in the front of it. I have not tried it out yet but it should be very fast.

The list price of Sony reader which works flawlessly, (not to say cheaper ones do not) is $69.95 USD. I picked mine up with a $20 discount coupon from Sony.

I may be wrong, but the actual transfer rate of a stick reader is typically less than half of what USB is capable of. So when other means of adapting the reader to drives, etc. I am skeptical if they are indeed any faster and not just more convenient.

I have one of the blue zios also and it works great. I had an acom data and it caused me lots of problems with Windows XP.

I have the Sony reader/writer optical mouse and i really really like it. Beats having a usb mouse and a differnent usb reader hooked up to my laptop all the time. All depends on what you want i guess.

The best and cheapest USB memory stick reader is an Epson 785EPX Photo printer, believe it or not!! It has a PCMCIA slot for digicam media; put in your memory stick and it looks like a disk on the PC. If you bought a camera recently, you can get a $100 Epson rebate on the printer. That makes it $178-$100 = $78. And then you send in the CompactFlash adapter from the printer to Epson and they swap it with a Memory Stick adapter for free. So for $78 you get a super photo printer and a USB memory stick reader!!

This sounds like a fantastic deal, but going to Epson's site and finding the 785EPX does not reveal any rebate information. You can't even buy this printer from Epson right now, it is "Temporarily Unavailable." Also this has to be the least portable stick reader solution. Not exactly something you would throw in a laptop bag when going on vacation. Can it read the sticks while printing?

Speaking of cheap Memory Stick readers, does anyone know anything about the Dazzle Memory Stick Reader? Buycomp.com has it for _$14.95_ and of course it is backorderd. I found it on Dazzle's web site and it seems to be a real product, but there is next to no information about it. It even comes with DVD burning software to quicly turn pictures into DVD based slide shows. What's the catch?

Buycomp.com also lists a Delkin Efilm Memory Stick to USB port reader for $24.95, also backordered.

Hi Jay;

I did exactly that, here in Ontario, Canada. I bought the Epson 785EPX, sent the rebate slip in as well as the memory stick swap deal and got a fabulous printer to boot. With the $100. rebate and after selling the "extra" memory stick adapter, the printer will cost me about $129.00 Canadian.

I've printed a few photos with it so far and it's simply outstanding. If I had one complaint, it would be that it appears to go through ink faster than my other color inkjet. I guess that's what you get with the higher resolution printers.

Regards

The problem I have is that the Epson Rebate rebate offer I have expired 1 September 2001. I just bought a Sony F707 and wanted to change out the PC card adaptor that came with the Epson printer for the Memory Stick adaptor.

I think I will send it in anyway, and see if they will still honor it. The worst Epson can do is send it all back to me and say no go.

Don't give up so easily. Here's the rebate form:

http://www.epson.com/rebates/Photo785_Camera_coupon.html

The printer is hard to find right now... PCMall.com has it for $199 + $20 shipping. Buy.com shows it for $178 and free shipping but it's on backorder...too bad. The rebate is good until March so you could wait until after Christmas.
Also this has to be the least portable
stick reader solution. Not exactly something you would throw in a
laptop bag when going on vacation.
On the contrary, the memory stick adapter plugs right into your laptop PCMCIA slot -- the printer is PCMCIA also. Standards are great aren't they?
Can it read the sticks while printing?
Probably but I haven't tried it.

Heh, heh. You didn't think they were really giving away those printers did you? They are gaining ink & paper repeat customers.

Thanks for the link! I even tried to search the epson site for "rebate" and didn't find it.

I'll be watching for a chance to scoop up this printer after Chrismas!

O.K, you got me there. I didn't even think of taking the adapter out of the printer and using it in the laptop! For that matter the same adapter would work in a Digital Wallet.

So at this point it is almost like you are buying the ink carts and they are throwing in a printer and a Memory Stick reader for free.

The "catch" is that there has apparently been some last minute glitch or other delay in getting the product to market. This is the explanation that I got from dazzle. It seems like a potentially great product in that, as you note, it is apparently both a mem stick reader and an mpeg authoring system roled into one, if I understand the Dazzle info and e-mails correctly.

I have been checking the dazzle website daily and it keeps saying "coming soon," when I click on "buy now." I would also make sure that the device at buy.com is the "six in one" reader that has the authoring software with it.

re: USB memory stick readers

I found one made by ACOM for $29 sitting on the rack next to the $79 Sony readers at a local computer superstore. It came with a 3 foot USB extension cable too and had a little holster that could be velcroed to my monitor. Installed easily and works fine.

I put the Sony USB cable away and don't plan to use it again.
