Egret Landing Series

I like these tweo, the rest look a bit dull to me. The creppy constant worry about a blown highlight is leading several people in this forum to post these dull, underexposed images when in real life, there are blow highlights so why not some in photography ? I prefer a little loss of detail in some white spots over dull underexposed images any time.

I don't know... I calibrate my monitor about every 2 weeks with a Spider 2 Pro and the first 4 images seem underexposed to me.

Might have something wrong with my monitor though, the birds look grey, not white, on the first 4 images and the images are overhall too dark, I mean, the water is near black, the first one shows water reflection s on the bird chest and wings, so it was a bright day. I will calibrate my monitor again and see how they look after I do so..
Hi,

This is an incredible collection of images. Your exposures and
compositions are perfect. Are these crops or full frame images?

Very interesting Stan. I do caliberate my monitor often with SpyderPro 2
Studio version. They looked fine to me on couple of different monitors.

Hi Seetharam,

Very nice series.

Egrets are tough to photography because of the white color. There are not to many around here at this time of the year.

I have not heard of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands but Googled it and see it's by Huntington Beach. Are there any other large birds that inhabit that area.

Nice work with these birds.

Best regards,

harveyf

Thank you for kind words Harvey. Egrets , GB Herons and pelicans are common year round residents for that area. These days we are seeing skimmers and terns a lot. We have a turn island there with millions of terns. This place attracts wide variety of birds.

It is in Huntington Beach on Warner Ave. Here is their website if you are interested further more. http://www.bolsachica.org/Birders/index.html

I shoot there quite often with other local photographers.
Nice work with these birds.

Best regards,

Hi Seetharam,

These are all fine captures. Most appear about 1 stop underexposed. I suspect you were trying to avoid blowing the highlights. This one is spot on:

I love the light coming through the feathers. You might want to try shooting in manual exposure when the light is consistent as you can nail the exposures.

It that an LCD version? since it is discontinued version and older versions did strugle a bit with LCD monitors.

And they do look fine, but, like form the first and the last, the first does not seem a little "dark" to you and your monitors ? I mean, egrets are supoosed to be white and not grey am I correct ?

But since Morris does agree about underexposure, I will not bother calibrating my monitor again right away.
