Thursday night I placed my order for the Canon G2 at Photoalley. They were listing the camera in stock shipping in 24 hours when I placed the order. I upgraded shipping to 2 day for $12.95 since I need the camera on Tuesday. After my orderstatus had be "processing" for the last two days I called their support phone number. Turns out to that this they are only able to take orders and not provide support but they were going to forward my inquiry to the support department which was going to contact me. Of course that never happend and today my online order status changed from "proccessing" to "backordered".

So here is where I am standing now: Haven't heard from customer service yet and their phone help is unable to say when they will get a new shipment in and when my order will be filled. I really wanted to have the camera on Tuesday, which is not going to happen. Paid an extra $12.95 for express shipping which is meaningless in light of the backorder. Price of camera has dropped another $10 since I locked in a $90 discount that has meanwhile increased to $100.

So what to do? Hope that they will send out the camera eventually or cancel the order and place it somewhere else. I went through the MSN site to get the $100 rebate and used the Amex Blue card for the pricematch.

Anyone know of a good place that has the G2 in store that I should go with?

Thanks, protodoc

You didn't say what you bought the camera for so I don't know what kind of price you need. If I recall, the price Thursday was 899. The price now is 799 from Photoalley until Dec. 10th.

You can buy it from B&H for 730 in stock. They are probably the best camera retailer in the planet. They won't qualify for the MSN rewards but you can still get the price matching. Compared to Photoalley's 799, you'll be paying 30 more. If you're comparing to the old photoalley price of 899, you'll save $70 if you cancel your old order. Also keep in mind that Photoalley charges sales tax to shipments to California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

I'm ordering my G2 from photoalley tomorrow because I can wait a couple of weeks to get the best deal. Just in case they never ship, I'm ordering a backup G2 from B&H. I can always return it or sell it on Ebay at a profit after factoring the AMEX price match.

The price I got was $810 (the 10% discount was in effect). I live in New York so Photoalley doesn't charge sales tax but B&H does. I have dealt with B&H in the past and they have good customer service but it would be more expensive for me to buy from them.

Is there another reputable internet dealer that the MSN rebate works with?

Protodoc,

I too ordered on thursday from Photoalley. I have been checking status constantly and it is still in "processing". When I saw they dropped the price to $799, I sent an email to customer service and asked them to credit me the difference. I just got and email saying they are out of stock, expect to have more G2's in 7 days and would credit my AMEX the difference.

I am hoping to stick it out and get a great deal! Let me know when you get yours.

hey

I have been complaining about this forever on this board.

I too ordered one on Thursday. Because I had had a similar horrible experience with them before, I CALLED and asked them before ordering, and they said yes, they were in stock, had 26 lying around the warehouse. So I ordered.

Friday I emailed customer care and they said they will have shipping status available for me late Friday.

Never happened, on Saturday it switched to 'backordered'. haven't heard from them since.

I too needed it this coming Friday, so ordered express.

This is a habit with PhotoAlley. Their phone customer service sucks because they aren't PhotoAlley people, but a 3rd party company hired to provide customer care. Essentially, they know nothing, and just write to the same [email protected] email you write to. These people reply whenever they wish.

Hold out for a few more days. If you don't hear anything you may want to try ritz or crutchfield which also particiapate in the msn passport holiday reward program (however, with those sites you will max out on your AMEX pricematch at $250 since they offer the G2 for $899). If you go over to http://techbargains.com and you can find a coupon for crutchfield which will help. Surprisingly, it looks like 800.com is no longer participating in the holiday reward program (at least they are no longer listed at http://www.eshop.msn.com/softcontent/softcontent.aspx?scmId=907 ).

Also, check your order page at photoalley carefully. On my order it said "not shipped" by the camera, but at the top of the page it said "shipped". Sure enough, it arrived a few days later. My guess is they shipped it the same day I got confirmation from msn on my holiday reward.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I went back to double check the status of my order and it has reverted to "order in process" and "not yet shipped" and sure enough the website now lists the camera as "in stock".

Now this could either mean that they got a new shipment in or they are trying to sucker more people into placing an order that will not be filled for weeks to come. Let's hope it is the first and not the latter.

I see my status as "ready for shipping" as well.. I hope this means they got more and are pushing 'em out the door as quickly as possible. Might just have it by Friday after all.

I'll keep up hope but keep my fingers crossed.

Just to add an extra wrinkle: I call photoalley and their phone people say that the order hasn't shipped yet because credit card authorization failed. Checking with Amex I found out that the charge went through fine yesterday. This transaction with photoalley is definetly not smooth sailing. I hope it will work out in the end.

PC MALL price was $760 back in October.

I wasted 4 weeks waiting for PHotoAsswink .

PC MALL had it at my door in Chicago 14 hours after i called . Called 8pm ,arrived 9:30 am next day . $12. shipping .

Dont be suckered , look around, try a MYSIMON search. Don't listen to the LIES !

Reading all the responses, I don't know where you guys find your prices. I've found a place where they list it at $589.
it's at http://www.regencycamera.com
If anyone can tell me if they've ever heard of it let me know.

I've also found other places that listed it a little below $600 and some just a little above it. Well, that's all I have.

this is from experience... when a store carries a camera for more than a reasonable amount less than the normal price, there's a catch.

i don't know what it is for RegencyCamera, but you can call and check this:

1. they might not give you the whole kit, i.e. they just sell you the camera body and battery, CF card, etc. are "extra". this is the most usual case

2. its a grey market item or something like that, and hence doesn't come with a valid warranty. They try to cover with a third party warranty, which might be useless.

check out on this, check first at resellerratings.com, and also epinions.com, Better Business Beureau, etc.

I've read in many forums that Regency will tell you the camera is in stock then try to sell you a bunch of accessories at inflated prices. If you decline the accessories, they'll tell you the camera is no longer in stock. That's why everyone here uses them as a price match rather than buy from them. If they would legitimately sell the camera at $589, why would anyone go through the trouble of buying from someone else only to do a price match with them?

For all those having problems with Photoalley and NOT living in NY, just buy from B&H for 730 and forget about the MSN rebate. If you keep limiting yoiurself to Ritz or Crutchfield, you'll pay $899 less $100 MSN rebate. That's still 799 which is $70 more than you'll pay if you just buy from B&H.

Time to eat some crow:

Amex first told me that the charge went through but I talked to them again and now they are saying that it was declined since the card was not activated yet. So it is not Photoalley's fault that the order has not gone out yet. At least Amex is overnight shipping my card now so I can place a new order with Photoalley.

I can confirm this. I called about a week ago to order the camera. First, they were very rude when I asked wether the camera was the complete kit, full warranty, etc. Next, they told me that the Canon battery would only work for 15 minutes and that I should buy an extra battery. They also they told me the camera took lousy pictures without additional filters. They tried to sell me a long list of other accessories. After I told them I didn't want any of that, they informed me the camera would ship out in a month. I challenged them and informed them that their web page said the cameras were in stock. He lied and told me was looking at their web page and it said one to two weeks. Needless to say I didn't order from Regency.
