I have not been able to download the DNG converter from Adobe. Tried to register for an adobe-id but was not successful.

Is the DNG converter meant to be free or do you actually have to buy an ADOBE product to be registered with an adobe-id then only get the DNG converter?

One of what I learnt in the Business Law 101, "the purpose of a business is to make money."

If you have a way to read the DNG, it's free. If you have no other ways to read the DNG, even if you own an Adobe product, it may not necessarily work. I have the Adobe Photoshop CS, but have not upgraded to CS2. I borrowed a friend's Canon 5D, took photos, converted the CR2 to DNG, and tried to open it with Adobe Photoshop CS, it wouldn't let me.

I just verified (again) that Photoshop CS, with ACR 2.4, will successfully process DNGs created from Canon EOS 5D CR2s. Here is a page that may help:

He is correct.

I had the ACR2.4, but installed at a "wrong" location. It needs to be at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats and not C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats
