Sony Alpha DSLR-A100, hands-on preview

Don't think so. the Zeiss is APS only not FF... if I read the data correctly

There is no way the new alpha is going to give cleaner ISO 800/1600 shots than the 5 or 7D....

This may or maynot be an issue...for me I use higher ISO a fair bit..so no not complaining there is a camera to get if I need it...but wont be rushing out to buy one....

As for build, the 5D was well built...whatever anyone says....

Its an impressive jump into the market thats for sure..

As for the megapixel warriors..they wanted more mp...they got it...now I cant wait to hear them moan about the noise! sigh......cant have it both ways...........

Next year you will hear..."not goot enough" ...I need 12/14mp......

Thats the megapixel warrior for you...whatever you give him its never enough...

Great review Phil, After reading about the anti dust feature on this camera I can't help but wonder if that's not what our 5D and 7D's do now. I say this after looking at Pete's web site URL it will take a min. to load. Looks like that's what the AS is doing. Just a thought though!

If given the chance how many would trade there 5 or 7D's at this moment with out any track record for the New ALPHA?

No the alpha is nice..but the 5D is good enough for me...and 6mp is plenty...better cleaner high ISO...will be the order of the day..

I would even get a s/h 5 or 7D later on...or maybe an alpha if i busted the 5......

Obviously the 5D replacement. I'm gonna wait for the Pro or the 7D
upgrade.
I'll wait for the replacement's replacement. Wait, maybe there will be an even better replacement after that. Yes.

What is the general take on AF on the new Sony Carl Zeiss lenses? Will they have AF?

I'm particularly interested in the SAL 16-80 to replace my lowly kit lens, but I want AF.

"Internal Flash

The 7D has a pop-up flash on the top of the viewfinder prism, it is opened manually by flicking it up. When raised the flash is approximately 110 mm above the center of the lens, this compared to the Canon EOS 20D's flash which when raised is 95 mm above the center of the lens. The built-in flash unit has a guide number of 12 and a maximum sync speed of 1/160 sec (1/125 sec with AS on). In a low light situation with the flash raised the camera will strobe the flash to act as an assist lamp for the AF system (it must be raised manually to perform this function)."

Also found it interesting they call AS Super Steady Shot but in display it still says AS. Like that they have "improved it". Some time ago I raised the possibility for future KM cameras and someone jumped all over me saying it couldn't be done. Also like the dust removal. But I'll keep my 7D until the A200???? comes out (;-).

Nice replacement for the 5D, now I just have to wait for the 7D replacement and then another year so I can afford it. ;)

Im about to buy a flash for my 7D, should I buy the Sony flash?

Were going to get the Metz 54 MZ-4 flash and am wondering about compability backwards and forwards if you know what I mean?

Will the new sony flash fit the 7D and will the Metz fit the Sony A100?
Maybe Im too eager, but then again.. somebody might have the answer. :)

Cheers and thanks for any replies.

It is very nice preview too. It is interesting to read how Davids feeling toward A100 changed (towards better) in time spent with it.

And his (early) conclusion is very positive. Although, he didn't forget to mention the drawback of having the first real AF mount - it got a bit too old.

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/sonydslra100/page3.asp

For example; 70-200 F2.8 SSM Sony $2399 list
70-200 F2.8 SSM Canon $1899 list, $1100 street (non IS version)

Unless SONY brings down the lens prices, I dont think many people
will switch.
Like that would be a show-stopper for many of potential buyers? Like for 0.3% or so? I agree they are too expensive, so than just buy an (excellent) Sigma 70-200/2.8 for

I have 11-18 lens with AS and NOBODY else (except Pentax soon) can offer that. That is why I had switched.

Hi Eric,
The primary concern (for most people anyway)
seems to be the noise of the 10MP sensor. That's the "make it or
break it" element of this camera for me.
Well, if that is of primary concern, you should think about Canon 5D.

New sensor will probably have somewhat higher noise at ISO 1600, just like D200 does. It depends how Sony will handle it. David from imaging-resource commented about high NR (smearing) at ISO 1600. But that is from pre-production model, we shall see.

Anyway, don't forget that there are 10MP, so if you downscale to 6MP, signal/noise ratio should improve and I expect it to be no worse than for 5D/7D.

but the system seems to be quite expensive now(how
much does a 70-200 f2.8 USM IS L cost for Canon?)....
List price is $2899.99

You want to talk list price or street price???

...

The Sony Alpha 100 is a wonderfull upgrade for the KM 5D. No doubt now the best entry level by far!

Now I just need Sony to make a version with a metal based body, a PC sync terminal, 1/8000 s max shutter, a buffer for 12 RAW, 4 fps cont. shoot. and a battery grip option!! That will be my 7D upgrade ( A200? )

Always having fun with photography ...

5D's out of my budget, but I do like available-light shooting, and the lower noise level of Canon is definitely something I miss since jumping over. Even with the XT or 20D, noise was significantly less noticeable at all ISO settings than it is with my 5D. Still, it's a tradeoff I was willing to make for AS. I just hope at some point the sensor capabilities of Sony's DSLRs narrow the gap with Canon.
