Sony Alpha DSLR-A100, hands-on preview

hehe... so we were right when we thought Phil already had the camera :)

In the preview also includes the pricing information for the lenses.....which is not even on Sony's site. The 70-200 SSM is now $2400, and 300 2.8 SSM is $6000(!). The 135 f1.8 is $1400.....

Costs more than the KM stuff for sure....

The camera itself:

The menu looks like a direct transplant from 5D, so is the VF. And Sony are claiming a 3.5 stop improvement with "Super Steadyshot".

It does look like a good camera, and definite improvement over 5D feature-wise, but the system seems to be quite expensive now(how much does a 70-200 f2.8 USM IS L cost for Canon?)....

I didn't like Phil's tone of the build quality on the Sony is better than the previous Minolta offering....but then I have nothing to compare to and I love my strudy 5D.....

Very nice hands-on preview of the camera's features... but where are the pictures? The primary concern (for most people anyway) seems to be the noise of the 10MP sensor. That's the "make it or break it" element of this camera for me. Not that I'm complaining... any news is appreciated. I'm just eager to see how it actually performs.

It's got a dial for predefines programs!
It's lost it's dial for EV correction!

I'll buy it when hell freezes over!

Ok, I've said it many times before, but I have to see a usable high ISO shot from any of the SLRs and I have seen, and used the Canon FF DSLRs which are hailed to have the best noise performance. Well, I'll rather use lower ISO, a fast lens, and image stabilization anyday. To me the most important is the IQ between ISO 100-400, and seeing what the D200 is capable of, I'm not worried one bit.

I'm very encouraged after reading this preview. I'll not be upgrading for some time, but I think that things are in good hands.

As Eric H says, I will be interested in the noise figures (could there be a reason why there is no iso 3200?).

I was wondering where the Fn button had gone and I like the use made of the LH knob, WB changes (on the 5D knob) don't need instant access.

The remote looks as if it will fit our 5D and 7D models.

Looks cool!

Nicest thing: it uses 10MP CCD!

I don't want CMOS, ever!

Good thing for all of us!

I must say bravo Sony or KM!!!

This will be a D200 killer for sure!!!

I don't know about a D200 killer... There's still a bunch of features lacking to take it to that level. It is, however, going to be serious competition for the 350D, D70, and maybe to some extent the 30D. Depends on what people are looking for. It's almost attractive enough for me to buy. If the thing had a grip, I might just try it out. I guess I'll just wait until the fall.

One good thing, with a Zeiss 85 1.4 comming out in AF, the used market for Minolta 85 1.4G lenses should go back to normal levels. I believe Phil quoted the price at $1299 and I think the Minoltas have been selling used in that range lately.

I don't see why. D200 offers a rock solid, feature rich, sealed body which in my opinion is well worth the $700 or so difference.

I was talking about features and sam CCD for the price. I know that body is a different thing. And to be fair there is not just D200. We also have D70s, D50, 30D from Canon, Pentax, etc...

So Sony did a nice job here. And offering a 10mpix on a entry model I really don't know what a new 7D could have beside a better body. Maybe they will put a FF sensor in it...

Obviously the 5D replacement. I'm gonna wait for the Pro or the 7D upgrade.
