Problem with RAW + jpeg on D200

Just got my D200. When I shoot in RAW, it saves the files correctly as NEF. When I shoot in jpeg, no problems either.

But when set the camera on RAW + basic (or normal or fine) I get the following problem. I think the camera is taking the RAW shot and saving the jpeg as well. But when I download the images, I only see 2 identical basic jpegs for each shot taken instead of one RAW and one jpeg.

I have tried another CF card just in case this is the trouble, same result. Interestingly when I use the cable to my PC (so bypassing the CF card), it works fine....a NEF file and a jpeg are saved for each image.

Have I got a dodgy camera or am I doing something wrong?

Depends on what method you are using to download the images to your computer.

The standard Windows camera wizard doesn't recognize NEF files, even after applying the RAW camera viewer fix.

All the recent NIKON and Adobe software recognize and download NEFs. Otherwise it is as you have done, use the card and a mass storage device and just copy them over.

Are you taking the card out of the camera and putting it into a card reader? That is what I think you are doing as you state "When I connect the camera to the PC with the USB cable it works fine". I would think then your card reader or whatever software you are using to read the card in the reader is the problem. I use a card reader and use either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk 6 Pro to access the reader and files on the card. The read is listed as a storage device and given a hard drive letter and when I insert the CF card from the D200 it sees it as Nikon D200.

I did have a slight problem to start off with because I had mapped networks drives as the next 2 drive letters after the local drives and the reader likes to be the next letter after the local drives. Once I remapped the network drives to letters down the alphabet and reconnected the reader it was seen as drive I and I haven't had any problems since then.

This might be the problem. A card reader sees the NEF/jpeg but for some reason if I go straight from the camera it doesnt. Depite having PS CS with extra NEF plugins, and Nikon Capture 4. I will persist!

Harry, It has been my understanding that PS CS is not compatible with D200 NEFs. CS2 is required.

pretty sure.
