Can anybody here confirm if this product transfers camera files in their original state or rewrites them with different names, compression or looses EIXF data?

I see one of my cameras is on the Apple compatibility list, my XT and Nikon not, but I have seen evidence that it will work with my XT.

Thank you.

I transfered images couple of times. Did not lose any information. I shot with my Nikon D2H, RAW + jpg (medium size), so every image has 2 versions. The trasfer was also quite swift. I'd say it looks like the speed is about 1GB of images in about 10 - 15 minutes. It maintains the original names just the same as any HDD would.

This is not my main PSD, so I did not experiment too much, but as an emergency scenario (if I run out of memory with my other devices), it looks like a viable solution (especially when done in the hotel room).

I heard that initial test for 1GB took about 40mins and ate over 1/2 of the battery. This was a deal breaker for me on buying the ipod. If there are other tests out there I would like to see them.

I'm guessing this, but I suspect the difference in speed of transfer will be down to the camera. If the camera is a USB 1.1 device, the transfer will be slow (very max speed 11Mbps); USB 2.0 Hi-speed is almost 40x faster than this (again in theory). The iPods are USB 2.0 and use Hi-speed. Some cameras say they're USB 2.0 but only at full speed (the old USB 1.1 speed). Very confusing! Check your cameras specs.

I just got my camera connector yesterday, and have transferred just one photo over for a test! But it was very fast.

The camera connector works fine with a Nikon D70 and a Pentax Optio S5i - the files transfer without name changes, jpegs can be viewed, NEF's can't but do transfer to it and from it OK. My preference (to save the camera battery) is to use a Belkin card reader instead of plugging the camera in. I haven't as yet transferred a full card so can't comment on the speed issue but those that I have transferred have been acceptably quick.

Just did a quick test using my Rebel XT since it has USB 2.0.

Took 4 minutes for 100mb of JPEG, and Raw+JPEG files.

I would use it as a last resort and only some place where you have power outlets.

There are some older card readers that will work with the Camera Connector. I have an old Lexar CF/MMC/SD card reader that works just dandy. When I was on a cruise last year, I'd pop the card in the reader, the reader in teh connector & iPod, and then drop the whole thing in my camera bag before going to dinner. And then when I got back, it was all on the iPod (plus, of course, I could keep shooting while it was dumping)

can someone give a definitive answer on the speed question?

we've had one quote of 15mins for 1GB which would be virtually usb1 speed.

and another quote of 100MB in 4 mins, (1Gb in 40mins?) which would be considerably slower than usb1, and that from a usb2 camera!

my girlfriend is thinking about buying one.

Ok I have uploaded a video for download.

Be warned the video is rather crappy, taken with my Canon A80 about 5 minutes ago. Sorry I suck at video's and well I did not want to spend a lot of time on it.

It shows my Ipod Photo downloading 11.3mb from my rebel XT, I try and show the Rebel Xt logo but it was just to dark. Sorry for the shaky camera work but this should put to rest and questions.

Just time from when I hit the center button to start the impor to when the screen changes to done.

The file weights in at just under 14mb and is a standard AVI file so everyone should be able to view it with the default player, the just click the link.

thank you very much for your trouble, downloading now :)

I made that just under 30 secs, so around 0.4 MB/s, thanks again!

Hi there

I have a quick question - I tried to search for the answer, but couldnt find one, so apologies if it has been answered before.

i have the apple IPOD camera connector. I couldnt afford at the moment to get a dedicated portable storage device (like the Hyperdrive HD80 or the JOba one etc), and the camera connector was quite cheap relatively.

So - I received it on Friday, and gave it a go on the weekend, transferring 750Mb from my 1 gb ULtra II card in the Canon 350D to the IPOD. It worked well, taking about half an hour, and gave me the comfort of seeing the photos were there safely on the IPOD.

(I acknowledge the criticisms of this method - ie the battery usage - my IPOD was pretty drained afterwards, and the camera battery must have been used a fair bit, and it took a while to do also.

My question:
  • Can I delete individual photos once they are the IPOD? (or do i Have to delete an entire roll!!!)
  • WHen I want to put them onto my laptop - do I do this by synchonising with Itunes? or how do i do that, so that i can transfer the files into the folder where I want them?
  • Is there anyway, I can rename the folder they are in on the IPOD? Ie for a date reference? as opposed to Roll 1, 2, 3 etc.
Thanks for your help

1 - entire roll

You will find one DCIM folder inside your I pod (disk mode)

No

using Belkin Digital Camera Link to 4th gen IPod.

750MB, 23 minutes to copy and the same to verify. I would suggest that you should start with fully charged IPod and I have not tried to copy any more than 1GB per IPod charge.

I believe that the Belkin Media Reader is slower than the Digital Camera Link. The DCL uses 2 AAs and "Good Alkalines" (Belkins words) will last for 3GB of copy.
I do not have any experience with the Photo Ipod.

My own opinion is that the IPod will do the job but battery life must be carefully managed. I intend to get a dedicated device such as Nexto or PD70X.

I fail to understand if the transfer speed is hardware limited to 0.4MB/s as described above how a usb2 cable can possibly make the slightest bit of difference.
Just remember what cable you use. USB 1.1 or 2.0. If you use a
cable compatable with USB 1.1 that is as fast as you will go.

It might be worth trying to find an old card reader that works with the camera connector. Save yourself the wear & tear on the camera.

Hi there

thanks for your tips.

I have a card reader (CF) which i use when I transfer photos from the cards to the laptop.

I tried this with the camera connector last night, but it didnt work.

Looking on the net, it appears that only card readers that have their own power supply seem to work with the IPOD camera connector.

I tested the transfer of photos from IPOD to computer, and that was easy, and fine. and then deleted photos (the whole roll) from IPOD.

I did a further transfer, from CAmera (350D) to the IPOD , and noted that the battery light goes to red, duiring the transfer, but then goes back to green....

I agree wouldnt try to do more than 1gb transfer from the camera to the IPOD.

I dont have the belkin devices that someone referred to.

Question .

Say I fill up a 1gb card with 512 mb of photos.
I transfer (import) those to the IPOD.
I dont delete those photos from the CF card.

The next day i fill up the rest of the CF Card

WHen I go to attach that CF card to the IPOD

Thanks

Mark

All photos again.
