I think it's time we put down some rules for what qualifies as a good bird shot. I've seen many tricks used and some of them were just not proper. I therefore propose the following rules. Feel free to add.

1) Taping the beak is not allowed! Clicker didn't know that so he get's a pardon.

2) Gluing the birds feet are allowed but the glue must be dissolved within 24 hours. The 24 hour limit also only applies when it's getting dark and you have to wait until next day to get a good shot. If the shot can be taken right away the bird should be released as soon as possible.

3) Cutting off the bird's legs is NOT ok! Jón gets a one week quarantine for doing that.

4) Stalking a duck can cause severe trauma to the duck. Forrest you need to respect ducks' rights! One week's quarantine for you too.

5) Duck shots always get more credit than shots of other birds.

6) Pictures of pet ducks deserve the most respect.

Very Helpful, Maxven.

I would also propose adding- any picture of a duck mounted to a wall does not count. If you are able to tie the duck to the wall, take the picture, and then return the duck to the wild (minus a few ruffled feathers) then, I am OK with that. But beware, ducks do not like to be tied to walls.

Daffy Duck and Donald Duck pictures are copyright infringements. Always remember that.

Just a few more helpful tips to your list... :)

Hi macroguy.

It's indeed a thin line between gluing a bird and tieing it up. We all want to stay on good terms with our feathered friends. Maybe Digipsych can help us understand which experience is most traumatic to the bird. A wall tied bird is a sure give away, since you'd have to do a lot of post processing to hide the wall and exchange it with a nature setting. With all the post processing experts in the forum I think it'd be hard to get away with.

Hmm... Still worth a thought...

Well, I think as long as someone gets a bird's expressed, written, permission to be tied up for a glamour shot it's OK. Maybe we should consult with the Olympus form legal team?

Yes, I got it. Use one of those sticky boards that you use to catch mice. Place them around your bird feeder. --Juli

Hi Michelle.

Tell that to Jón! I find a few names missing from this thread. Hmm... seems a bit suspicious to me. Perhaps some of the below mentioned people are out doing vicious deeds at this very moment!

Good trick Juli! I guess that's within the rules. I still find it suspicious that none of the culprits have replied to this post. Do you think they're out there with a pair of scissors, lots of glue, and duct tape?

First of all... some excellent rules Quackers. Thanks from all bird lovers.

Second, I think the "punishments" are more than fair
:wipes his brow

Third, these need to be added to the "Everything you need..." thread ASAP!

My favorite rule? 5 of course :^)

You guys are sick indeed, but I did smile reading the thread (what's that say about me?). But the thread reminded me of something: Remember the old photographers' tick of putting a butterfly in the fidge for 10-15 to slow down its metabolisim or something so that it will stay put long enough to have its picture taken? My question is: Is this now considered politically incorrect in that it might do real damage to the butterfly or is there any way we can still do this without being guilty of butterfly abuse? Thanks. Clicker
Hi Clicker.

I understand your relief. But you did come forward and apologize for taping that duck's beak. Jón still haven't admitted to cutting that bird's feet off and Forrest is probably out stalking innocent ducks as we speak.

Maxven

Hi Pat.

I wonder... birds are used to the cold but maybe spraying them with the stuff you use to get off chewing gum would work? I guess I'll have to take it up with the Bird Shot Committee. Could be a good trick. ;-)

If I soaked the feeders birdseed in wine, would I be contributing to the deliquency of Minas'?

I hope that was not like scraping fingernails on a blackboard. :)

How about baking some tranqualizers or anti-anxiety meds into some bread for the ducks? They don't get very stressed, and you get to use a slower shutter speed.

What about bringing your dog with you, to herd ducks?
