Hi folks,

Shaould I get a G2, Sony 707 or 4040. Money Not an Issue. Up till now I have been a happy Oly 3030 user. However, my work has kindly given me a bonus which allows me to spend up to $1200 (US) on a new Digital camera. I am an Aussie by the way. Live in Perth, Western Australia.

My plan is to pass on the 3030 to my dearwife and with her encouragement get a higher spec'd digital camera: either the Canon G2 or Sony 707. Sadly the Oly 4040 just did not feel right to me and reviews have not been all that encouraging. Unfortunately I am now in a quandary as to which to get. Those who have or have tested the Canon G2 and/or Sony 707 and 4040 please share your thoughts and real world use of these cameras. Thanks

Well if for no other reason, I would choose the Olympus 4040 for it's battery type. The CR-V3 battery is available just about everywhere now for under ten dollars. It is cheap and lasts a long time.

Battery type is a strong criteria for me when buying digital cameras. The others you mention use propietary batteries which are expensive (as well as rechargeable). I am not a fan of rechargeable batteries anyway.

From my recent decision making process, I'd throw the E-10 into the pot. Also you really need to handle the cameras to see what you like.

You'll also probably get a lot of flack for asking people to compare apples, oranges & cameras. Having a quick look at the reviews should help you quite a bit, try the following websites for starters.

http://www.megapixel.net

http://www.steves-digicams.com
http://www.what-digital-camera.com
http://www.digitalphotouser.co.uk/

You also find a lot of people in this forum telling you to pick up a 2100 or an E-100rs. These can currently be found for bargain prices & are still very good cameras.

Happy shopping,

Chris

p.s. I ended up going for the bargain e-100rs!!

Jonathan Hi,

I'm a happy Oly user having the 3040 and the 2100 but I have to admit, I'm dying to try the Canon G2. sigh

Hi...here's my opinion FWIW. Bought the G1 and sold it...not very interested in trying the G2. Owned the Oly 3030, 2100 and am holding on to the 100RS just because it's such a "one of a kind" camera. Two weeks ago I bought the 707 and have had great results with it. No BFS or problems of any kind. And...the pictures are beautiful. --Cathy

I can't either, but there has been a very rare occasion, where I have been glad of the ability to run my DC5000 on alkalines, for that must have shot, no power left in NiMHs.

I would go with the other 3 choices i heard sony has bad color very unrealistic also i own a sony syber shot P50 and the greens are terible they are over done always fake looking and bright. i also heard this about more expensive sony's also. now my new olympus 2100 on the other hand takes pictures that look true to what i was taking them of much better color.
Sony YUCK!! it's not just me a lot of people dont like sony for the bad colors..
Z28 MAN....

How about trying out the Nikon Coolpix 5000?

I'm not sure if it's in the same league as the Sony FV707, but have you looked at the Fuji 6900? I hear it has outstanding color. Pros: Great color, 6X optical zoom, useable digital zoom (good interpolation and offset CCD), 3.3 meapixel CCD, interpolation to 6 megapixel, low cost (relatively, under $600). Cons: marginal low light performance, no laser to aid focus, limited long exposure times. Just one more to consider :-)

If you go for the Sony 707, make sure you stop by the Sony forum and check out the issues folks have had with the 707. It seems like a great camera -- you just need to make sure you get one from the correct "batch".

G1 was a total fiasco...a total mess, but the G2 is a completely different camera. Its quality is simply amazing. My next camera :)

I've owned the G1 and 3040. I hated the G1 picture quality and reluctantly exchanged it for the 3040. I have no experience with the 707.

Why relunctantly? I wanted a camera that I could use 80% in point and shoot mode and 20% in manual modes. The G1' controls, swivel LCD, panaromic mode and menu system are MUCH better designed than the Olympus' (for my purpose). The G1 also has much larger storage potential (1,000M vs 128M).

I had a hard time getting quality shots with the G1 (primarily reddish hues and focus problems). The G2 keeps all the G1's good qualities and supposedly fixes its above problems. Because the models I've owned are nearly identical to the models you are considering (excl 707), I would go with the G2.

The 4040 is the only choice if you absolutely require the ability to use regular AA batteries.

Good luck.
