Challenge 68: Xtreme

“In repose” was all about being balanced, relaxed and stress-free. This topic is on the other end of the continuum. And it is as wide as your imagination: xtreme location, xtreme sports, xtreme wide-angle, extreme emotion, xtreme post-processing, xtreme contrast, xtreme temperature, … yes, perhaps even an xtreme cat, framed :-)

Push the envelope, explore the boundaries... above all, have lots of fun and create pictures that simply scream “xtreme!”

Hi Lonnit, Sounds as if you were surprised (relieved?) to find that it worked this time around, after my confessions about bungled previous attempts? :-) Regards from afar. Nico Conradie

...If Africa is the cradle of Humankind, it is us that are afar....it is you that has remained close to home.

(Nico, I know what you meant, I'm just having some word fun).

Best Wishes,

Traveller

Thanks, Traveller. Yes, indeed, the supposed/alleged "Cradle of Humankind" region of Southern Africa is not more than say 50 kilometres from my home. But technically, I am writing from "afar", since I am currently on business in Bavaria, Germany. So I do actually feel quite "afar" - as in homesick! And I do realise that you were just having some word fun. :-) Regards. Nico Conradie

Well now , if the Americas were joined with Africa at one time , would that still be true ????????????????????????????

....I rather like Southern Germany, especially in the Spring. I realize that you're there on business, but just a two hour jaunt down the road is Salzburg, Austria. Though it is expensive now, Dollars vs. Euros, this remains certainly one of my favorite cities in Europe. See it if you can.

Thanks for the link also. It makes want to get to South Africa if possible....but it is such a long and expensive flight...$2,228 is the best that I can find now, LAX/JNB...that it is prohibitive.

Maybe in the winter it is better, but I think the best I have ever seen is $1,400 Round Trip.

Best Wishes,

Traveller

Sorry, Traveller, I just couldn't resist. Hope your not offended by the "Monkey Boy" reference. LOL ;)

Anyhow, my son (just finished 1st grade) entered a photo in the PTA sponsored Reflections Program. It advanced to state & was selected to be in an art exhibit this summer or fall (don't know which yet). He was the only elementary student from our school district to be selected for the exhibit. So I'm the big, proud mama!!!!! :)

The theme was "I wonder...". His entry was entitled "I wonder why dinosaurs are extinct." I had no idea how he was going to take a picture of this seeing as they are extinct and all... but he managed. Part of what the judges look for is creative interpretation of the theme. Here's his pic:

...that is a lovely set up, you should be the proud mother.

But remembering back to my own childhood, I realized looking at this image that your son...half-way believes that it is real...it is his, he created it and he can in his mind go there.

Sigh...to be a child again!

The only thing you've done is make me jelous of your son.

But that's nice too, in a sweet half sad way.

Best Wishes,

Traveller

An elderly man approached me yesterday at the Botanical Gardens. He asked about my camera and what I did with the pictures.

We talked some more and I gave him one of my photography cards. I hope he visits my website.

He said he likes photograph his garden, so he can see the blooms in the winter when they are no longer there. It just seemed like a simple pleasure that we miss in our day to day lives.

I'm leaving to go help shoot a 60th wedding anniversary, and your post just reminded me what my goal should be. I wrote about it awhile back, in the "what keeps you going?" thread, and since then forgotten it.

The slight mis-match in the windows tends to suggest that you took several pics with you toward the edge and stitched them together?

Never tried to shoot from a car window while it was moving, so I don't even know if that type of shot is possible, but are you in the black honda that's turning?

My extreme shot that is . . . Today I was up on Mt. Shasta at about 8,200 to 8,400 feet or so shooting above the treeline stitched supersize images for my wall mural project (has become all EXTREMELY time consuming I'm afraid). I became aware of S-curves forming from very high up the 14,162 foot mountain - extreme skiers coming down! But by the time I got my act together they were down in cloud shadows and behind terrain . . . Ah well - you can see their trail here in the lower right:

But does it count that we went as a family and dragged plastic tobagans up with us . . . what a ride down! Extreme sledding . . . Austrian and Swiss bobsledders watch out - here we come! But alas, my husband was steering . . . and although I mentioned, with great sincerity, the upcoming tree to him . . . he dumped my butt in the tree well anyway . . .

Looked like a yard sale - camera bag, tripod, ski poles, jackets, water bottles. lol Of course my daughter felt the need to record the event rather than help haul me up out of there :)

enjoy, Cindy
