Macro Rings...

Hi, I have both M2 and E2 rings from Nikon, but I still don't know how is the best way to perform their use. I've tried them, with lenses like 28mm, 50mm, 105mm and It isn't comfortable. With the 28mm I have to go very close the get in focus, so It is quite hard lo light the subject. With the 50mm can't be used, not focus at all. And the 105 mm, I get minimum focus at 4 feet away. So, what lens can I use to fet this ring working properly? Any suggestions?
