H5 compared to H1

I just got my H5 from B&H, and did some comparison shots with my H1 which I've had for just under a year (and have been very happy with). The H5 is a definite step up from the H1--already a good camera. For troublesome contrasty shots (trees against a bright sky) there is more CA from the H5, but there's also more detail, so that's a trade-off. Otherwise, I see no real negatives with the H5. The extra megapixels are useful, and the indoor shots are improved.

The H1 is going on ebay.

It would be nice to see what happens when you do a resize on one of those CA shots or ones with lots of noise.

I use freeware software irfanview which do a great job or resizing by doing a resample using a lanczos filter for the best possible quality.

Because the H5 has a better CCD then the quality of the shot should be better when resized/resampled to compare the two shots at 5MP each.

Sony DSC - H 1 (with 250D & VCL-DH1758); DSC - P 1 5 0;
Fujica STX-1N film SLR.

It looks to me that the H5 is focusing a little better at tele end of the zoom.

I miss the quick preview using the left arrow.

Pressing the review button results in the lens retraction and it takes some time to get it ready for next shot.

Tod--the H2 annoyed me with that lens retraction feature but my H5 doesn't do that for which I am relieved --wierd that your camera does.

That is indeed weird. I remember your post and was really upset about it.

Did you try it with some other lens attached with the proper setting in the menu?

I shoot mostly with the DH1758 attached and it annoys me when the lens gets retracted as I loose valuable time for the next shot.

Can your camera enlarge the image during auto preview (not the real view with the button pressed)?

Mine does not seem to, so to check the quality of the image I am forced to press the view button so I can enlarge the image with the zoom button..

Tod-nothing wrong with that as you cannot zoom in auto-review.I never have it on though just doing it manually if I want to. I have found though that if you mess about too long reviewing picture,ie. by zooming and scrolling for too long the zoom will retract but it has to be for a fair while.Just a quick zoom to check focus say,and zoom will stay out.I trust the focus so much that now all I really check is composition which I am endeavouring to learn more about. I see a review is out but not bothered about anyones remarks as personally I reckon its the best camera I have ever used.Did you see pics I put up? I think link has moved to page 2 now--cheers-Don
