Probably about a month ago I received my E100RS from NY Camera in Germany. It was the first batch of US NTSC cameras. It had a stuck pixel cluster on the CCD in addition several on the LCD and EVF. It had a US warranty card, came in a box that on Olympus America's website said that it was a valid US model, and Graham from NY Camera told me that it would be able to be fixed in the US. I decided to send it in about 2 and a half weeks ago and it came back yesterday. The CCD is fixed but there is still a stuck pixel on the EVF. I'm very disappointed!

ARE YOU KIDDING! I am because I'm estatic. Let me explain. Yes there was a stuck pixel but in the short time I used the camera, I noticed that the low light focus was not as good as my UZI. Keep in mind that this was before all the threads on this forum that talk about the focus problem. So I just thought that it was a problem with my camera. Then, in using the camera in conjunction with my FL-40 flash, the camera kept getting confused and getting the wrong exposure and completely blowing out the picture. The only way to remedy the problem was to turn off the camera and the flash and then to turn them both on again. Also, my viewfinder was much darker than my UZI making it very hard to use it indoors. I never had this problem with the UZI. Finally, even though the precapture and the the burst is AWESOME on this camera, for normal single shot use, I thought that it was a little sluggish compared to my UZI. So, when I sent in the camera, I mentioned all of the above except for the single shot sluggishness and the dark viewfinder. I forgot to tell them about that.

I toook out my camera yesterday and put it through its paces. Talk about a transformation! Everything was fixed (except for ONE pixel on the EVF) and the single shot performance matches or beats my UZI. The autofocus is fast and I can even focus in the dark with the help of the assist beam. I could not do that before I sent it in. Like I said, I'm estatic.

To make a short story long, Olympus America will fix your NTSC camera from Germany and if you have an auto focus problem or any problem that you think is different from that of the UZI (for those of you who have both), send it in. I was completely amazed at the transformation. I tried to check to see if there was a firmware upgrade but I could not find it in the EXIF info. Sorry for the long post but people had asked for me to chime in when I had the camera back. Now to take some pictures.

John,

Does the low light auto focus work right now? That seems to be the main problem I have with mine. It has a couple of hot and stuck pixels but they don't seem to show in the pictures, even in 8X10's. All else works great but I may want to see if I cn get the focus problem repaired.

John,

I got my E-100 about a week ago. Graham at NY Camera said that it would be a US model. I use the TV feature frequently to show pictures to my family. The camera came with a US warranty card in a gold box, but it has a CE instead of a FCC label on the bottom. Does your E-100 also fit this description?

Also, I can't get the video out to work. I have no problem with my US purchased E-10 with video out. I am suspicious that this is not a NTSC video out camera.--Thanks.Cleave

It is my understanding that the US models have the FCC label on the bottom. At least that's the case with the other OLYS I've gotten in the U.S. --Juli

Does your focus assist light shine in the center of the frame? Mine illuminates a small off-centered circle. The image appears to jump in the viewfinder, and then a seemingly random focus point is chosen. Very strange. I suppose the circle must be off center if it is coming straight out from the lamp, but what's with the viewfinder jumpiness?

John,

Very interesting. My E100 has lazy focus compared to my C2100. Would you check the firmware version your fixed camera has??

To do this just open any jpg file from the camera with wordpad (change the file type in the wordpad file select window to all files). Make sure word wrap is on. On the 3rd line you will see "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" just below the O in olympus is the firmware version. Mine is V151-77. I think this is the most common.

Thanks,

Hey Smokester,

Yes the auto focus works great now in low light. Maybe great is a little strong but certainly better than it was and about equal with my UZI. Also, before I sent it in, it seemed that the assist light was too far to the right of where I was trying to focus on. Now it seems to be near the center. I sent in my camera for the stuck pixels and got much more than I bargained for. Not only can it focus better, it is faster also. I would have been just happy to be able to focus on the same things that my UZI can focus on but to get the speed also was a big plus.

Cleave,

Your description fits my camera perfectly. Even though the camera has the CE logo instead of the FCC logo, they fixed it anyway. Plus I noticed a couple of things. Before I got my camera, I never noticed the CE logo before. I just noticed yesterday that my FL-40 flash has it instead of a FCC logo and I got it from B&H Photo here in the states! My Nokia cell phone also has the logo.

I haven't tried hooking it up to the TV yet and I probably won't for awhile so I can't answer your question regarding the Video out. However, the box says that it is NTSC and so it should be. I can't imagine that it was swapped out. If it doesn't work, then I would send it in to get fixed. It only took me 2 and a half weeks to get it fixed.

Before I sent in the camera to get fixed, the version was V.151-77. After I got it back, it was V. 151-79. It was upgraded. That might explain why everything works better on it now. Thanks Holland for showing me how to find out the firmware version. It wasn't showing up in the EXIF info that I was viewing through Ulead Photo Explorer or through QImage. I don't know if the firmware upgrade fixed the problem or not but I do know without a doubt that it is a better camera than before I sent it in.

I'm very interested in this too! Because my camera is currently
being repaired for hotpixels too.

John,

I am progably going blind, but I cannot find anything on my box that says NTSC. Where does it say that on your box?

My E-10 has the FCC logo as does my Sony Digital8 video cam. I am going to "play" with the E-100 a bit more to see if I can get the TV out to work.--Thanks.Cleave

I can't do it now but I'll take a picture of my box and display it tonight.

Here are two photos of the box that show where the NTSC indication is:

John,

I am going blind! You really went out of your way to help a fellow enthusiast. BTW, I got it working with my TV. The problem was the TV, not the camera.--Thanks.Cleave

Cleave,

That's great to hear. I'm asuming then that you did find where it said NTSC on the box. I was more interested in the additional software than I was the ability to play it on my TV. That's why I haven't checked it out yet.

Thanks,
